Sad about fall what to do?

I am not particularly fond of cold weather.  Skiing and snowboarding is fun.  In Colorado and Nevada when its sunny and warm enough to ski without a jacket. What do you do to make fall/cold weather more enjoyable?  Go apple picking? Make pumpkin pies? Holiday shop early? I start getting depressed about it around Oct 1st. This year I want to embrace the season, give me things to do :).  I live in NYC and sometimes Boston.  Don't suggest a drive to see the foliage, ugh.

Re: Sad about fall what to do?

  • I drink beer and shovel snow. Not always simultaneously, but definitely sometimes.

  • Fall freaking rocks. Every other season sucks and my mood is noticably better when fall is coming. We go apple picking, wine tasting, pumpkin picking. Go to haunted houses and pumpkin patches. Football games. Have bon fires, hay rack rides, fall BBQ, sit around the fire pit and drink beer, cuddle under a blanket, leave the windows open...Gosh I love fall.

  • Trespass on someone's lawn and rake their leaves then jump in them! That would be fun. I also like the apple picking, pumpkin pies and shopping ideas. You could buy a new pumpkin every week and decorate it and display too.
  • I love fall. I like to buy sweaters, wear sweaters, wear scarves, drink apple cider, take photographs of fall leaves, go on hikes, take leaves and throw my dog into them, bake, christmas shopping, drinking (its really a year-round type of thing), bring out my heavy comforters. I love fall.
  • Fall festivals. Always make me happier about it. They have the best food. This year I can't wait for Oct. though.

  • I love a really good cup of apple cider and indulge often now that they make a low-cal brand - 25 cals/cup!I also like shopping for new fall clothes :)  Sweaters are cozy!
  • Well, there's Halloween for starters.  Bonfires are always fun when it's just cold enough to need a sweater by the fire.  It's boot season and cold weather wardrobe season then, and by this time I'm sick of shorts and tank tops.
  • Why not take a drive to see all the fall colors??Seriously, there's a ton of stuff to do.  See if there's any local farms that you can apple pick or pumpking pick.  And with Halloween coming soon, there's sure to be a ton of haunted hayrides or corn mazes to go see.  Or like pp suggested, a fire pit with some hot apple cider.  Good times.
  • I never understood people who get so excited about going for a drive to see the foliage.  Seriously, you're wasting gas by tooling around to stare at trees.  How the f*ck is that entertaining.

  • We go to the apple orchard a lot.  But we don't pick our own because we're lazy.  We do, however, indulge in fabulous pie and caramel apples and cider.  It's my favorite thing ever.

  • Oooh I love Pumpkin beer! Bec- not too many yards to rake around these parts.  but I like mini pumpkins, so that could be cute! Gross story for you-last year i had a few medium pumpkins on our mantle.  Our cleaning person left me a VM saying she had thrown out the pumpkins since they had rotten to mush and were beginning to stain the mantle.  We hadnt been home in a couple weeks. Oops. TJ- I am perpetually cold.  It actually painful to be outside, even with appropriate clothing.  My body sucks at regulating temp.
  • hot buttered rum Hot cider hot chocolate with chamboard fondue for two
  • Get outside hiking whenever it's sunny. Daylight is key.September is usually the most difficult month for me mood-wise (that's always when my depression gets worse, if it's going to get worse); I think it's because we lose a ton of daylight over just 30 days. This year, though, I've had a lot to look forward to, so my mood's been great.
  • Curling - it's this wonderful sport that involves 2 hours of conversation followed by at least 2 hours of drinking and socializing.  It's done on ice (yeah, yeah, I know) but the odd time that someone has a dramatic wipe out it can be quite entertaining.  once you've made sure they're OK, of course.Holiday entertaining.Travel - this one is quite important.  Warmer places = good.I'm a baker too so pies, cookies, cakes, muffins, etc are all up there on the list.  This year, I might see about carving pumpkins with FI and some friends.

  • Fires, I forgot those. I love having a wood burning fireplace. I also love seeing my husband chop wood, its oddly sexy watching a man do that.
  • sometimes I do miss suburbia when people talk of fire pits and kids trick or treating in the neighborhood and hay rides, etc.  Last year I made sure we had a fire going in the fireplace every chance we could.  I used cherry wood (love how it smells when burning).  Maybe I'll get lots of pumpkin sented candles to have around the house.  I'm not very suzy homemaker and dont have seasonal decorations but candles would be good.
  • I meant *scented.*Great ideas ladies! I like the responses!
  • oh, and invest in a really good moisturizer.
  • OH! I LOVE fall in NYC :) Last year, FI & I would drive to Brooklyn Bridge, walk around Park Slope, find cute and inexpensive cafes to have a cup of coffee/tea and listen to jazz bands..I LOVE baking pumpkin pies, apple pie, muffins, soups..I enjoy trying out new recipes during fall because all the warm, fuzzy stuff you can't eat during the rest of the year, you can't make! I'm dreaming about hot chocolate with candy canes! Yummy :D
  • Kati- one of my best friends and my brother live in Socal. I go as often as I can! hoping to be out there in Dec.  Trips to the sun and warmth are key.

I go as often as I can! hoping to be out there in Dec.Oh nice you'll have to let me know!  We'll be back in TX for Christmas and in NorCal for a wedding the first weekend but will be around otherwise, so maybe we can grab a drink or something.
  • You're in NYC and think there is nothing to do?  First place to hit- Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery, they have a nice wine selection, make award winning hard cider, and have apple picking.  Their cafe is great with fresh bread, cheese plates, and interesting menu.
  • I bake and go for bike rides. Theres just something great about working up a sweat in the cold. Mind you its probably not good for you but it feels good.
