New Monogram

I'm having some items created for myself (robe, etc) and I would like to add my new monogram. My current initials are JMT so my monogram is now jTm. When I am married I am taking my FI last name which begins with an M. I am hyphenating my name for work but going by my newly married name in my personal life. Would my new monogram be - jMm or jMt? Thanks!

Re: New Monogram

  • I read through that twice and it still doesn't make sense to me. Why is your current monogram jTm? That implies two different people and a common last name.

  • Are you talking about your initials? You're talking about using two last names. It's easy to say you'll use one for work and one socially - but which will be your legal name? Which one will be on your SS card, your driver's license, your credit cards? I would say that one's your real last name, and I'd do anything personalized with initials based on that. But if you'll be using both names, and since you're just talking about decoration, it really doesn't matter which you choose - personal choice.
  • If you're keeping your middle name, your new monogram would be jMm.  If you're moving your maiden to middle and dropping your old middle, it'd be jMt.

  • My current monogram....meaning as a single person. I probably could have been more clear. I have some monogrammed items people have given me over the years and that's the monogram on them. I've never purchased any monogrammed items personally. If I was purchasing a joint item, a unity candle etc I know the monogram would be -my first initial, new last name initial, his first initial. But on a robe, I figured I should stick to my new initials (and not include his). I'm just thrown off with the hyphenation and don't know if it should be - my first initial, new last name initial, maiden name initial or my first initial, new last name initial, middle name initial.

[/i] In that case, same question - which middle initial will you be using? It's totally your choice. In a lot of official documents (driver's license in my state is like this) you can only have one middle initial regardless of how many middle names you might have. Which will you choose in those situations?
  • Thanks for the help ladies!
