Holiday poll, kind of

  • 1. I don't know how we're going to do it.  FI's fam lives about 2 hours away.  I always have to work the day after Thanksgiving, so it's senseless for us to go up there for Thanksgiving. We only have my car, and it's not good for the drive up to his family, so if he wants to go, he has to take a bus or train.  Christmas Eve and Christmas are tough too. Because of our work schedules, it will be hard to get to his family. Last year he took a bus up a day or 2 before Christmas, spent some time with his family, then got dropped off at my place Christmas Day and we went to my family's. But my family is tough because we do my mom's side of the family Xmas Eve and Dad's side Xmas Day. This year and next we may get to his family because we should be off work on the weekend. 2. Neither. I make goat cheese lasagna for Xmas. 3. It's not the holidays until someone watches Christmas Story or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families?Until I moved in with now-DH, it wasn't an issue... now, its actually a no-brainer. We do Thanksgiving with my parents in TX, and Christmas here with his small family.  He gets no time off between Tgiving and Christmas Day, so traveling then is out of the question.  He'll take the day after Thanksgiving, and we'll do a 4 day weekend trip to TX.I miss Christmas with my family, though - its a big deal there. :(  Here, they open presents on Christmas Eve (NMS), do 1 gift per person exchange with an approximate money amount (I can do about half that, because my family is double the size of his), and also do a joke gift exchange.Christmas Day is the big one in my family; tree has multiple presents for the kids (young and old), big breakfast and big dinner. Fire going in the fireplace.2. Turkey or HamEh.... I don't like warm turkey much at all. I like it the day after, cold, on a sandwich, with mayo and dressing/stuffing.  And I like country ham, the salty kind. Hard to find here.3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone _____ Puts in Christmas Story, Its a Wonderful Life, and follows it up with the reality of Christmas Vacation! And, oh yeah - someone gets snippy with someone - usually my mom and me, or I get psycho cleaning the house/cooking food, etc.Ok, great  - now I'm homesick...........

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • And for me, it's not the holidays until I watch "White Christmas" the first 5 times.   After that it's just gratuitous White Christmassing.

  • 1. We spend the morning with my parents/family and the afternoon with his2. Turkey3. It's not the holidays until one of our cats vomits up a pile of ribbon.
  • 1. DH's family lives farther away, I'm closer to my family than he is to his, and his family is unreliable...so far, we've spent every Christmas with my family and the last 2-3 Thanksgivings we've spent apart because he had to work either that day or the next day and so I went home to see my family. Not sure what we'll do this year. Eventually we'll start swapping years for Christmas, whenever it seems important to DH to do so. Supposedly his family is coming to visit around Christmas (but not on Christmas) this year to celebrate, but I'm not holding my breath that this will actually happen. 2. I hate ham, so turkey 3. Decorates the house? Our holidays are fun and stress free, so I don't expect anything bad to happen...but it starts feeling like Christmas when the decorations come out!

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? Haven't really had to deal with this yet, but this year we will. I think we are going to Thanksgiving at my parent's apartment the day of and then his parent's house the day after. I'm not sure about Christmas though....2. Turkey or Ham Turkey! Mainly because it comes with the stuffing and that is my favorite part! I really only like ham for easter.3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone watches the Cowboy game on Thanksgiving day and the Christmas Story on tbs Christmas day.

  • FI and I do Thanksgiving alone in Ithaca, but go to Texas for Christmas (luckily both our families are in Austin). His family does Christmas on Christmas eve, my family does Christmas on Christmas day, so it works out really well. Ham for Christmas. It's not the holidays until each member of my family is in a gigantic fight with e/o and I have to tame them all so we can sit down and have a civilized meal together. I'm the youngest one, but I always end up picking up the pieces. It's actually quite funny.

  • 1. Thanksgiving I cook and host with both our parents.  Christmas Eve we do with my dad's side of the family.  Christmas I host again (MIL doesn't cook) for my ILs at our house (my parents will probably come once we have kids).  This year is up in the air b/c DH is taking a job with a ski area which means winter holidays aren't really off...so we shall see. 2. Turkey for Thanksgiving, Ham for Christmas 3. Its not the holidays until someone pulls out the Monopoly board! (Yes, we are dorks--it is a tradition for Thanksgiving night with DH, BIL, BIL's GF, MIL and I...FIL usually falls asleep on the couch while we play)
