Holiday poll, kind of

2

Re: Holiday poll, kind of

  • 1. Thanksgiving with one and Christmas with the other--alternating years unless something comes up.  Like this year we need to be in DC in December to work on wedding stuff even though we went to DC for Christmas last year.  2. Gross.  3. It's not the holidays until I get a gingerbread latte.
  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? This is hard because we live near everyone.  Generally we end up having three holidays because we go to my mom's, his mom's and his dad's.  It sucks.2. Turkey or Ham Turkey3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone _____...gets in a fight.  My sister and brother generally.
  • 1) Alternate Thanksgivings, Christmas at my parents, New Years at his. 2) Both. And kielbasi. Always kielbasi. 3) Someone gets drunk. It doesn't matter who, but someone has to drink too much wine for it to be a real family get together.
  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? We split it up pretty fairly. My mom always talks with Mark & I about when she would like to have holiday dinners, etc...and her and my FMIL get along very well, they talk often actually...2. Turkey or Ham Neither. I like beef.3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone: drinks too much wine and goes BSC.

  • 1. If we are on in VA where both of our families are we go to my family first then go to his. My family eats early dinner during holidays and his family eats late. We are very full.2. Both3. I have pumpkin pie. It just makes the holidays.
  • 1) Since my parents live about 20 minutes from his mom and step-mom, it's not an either-or prospect. Everybody comes to our house (since we have the biggest kitchen)2) neither, depending on how many people we are serving. Sometimes we do turkey for Thanksgiving, sometimes we do ducks. Roast beef or roast pork AND smoked duck for Christmas3) drinks too much
  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? I'd like to spend Thanksgiving here with his family, and Christmas home with my family. We'll see what H thinks.2. Turkey or Ham - turkey for Thanksgiving, ham (and sometimes prime rib, too) for Christmas3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until we watch Christmas Vacation
  • 1. My mom cares a lot about Thanksgiving so we go there.  It's the one time she actually cooks. 2. Turkey! 3. After Thanksgiving dinner we always watch "The Ref".

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families?  It's awful.  I sometimes go to 3 different places for T-day and Christmas.2. Turkey or Ham Ham3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone gets Christmas songs stuck in my head.  Yeah, I know, boring.

  • 1. Alternate Christmas. I haven't seen my parents at Thanksgiving in about 6 years, it's usually time spent with friends, but FI is insistent we visit his parents for Thanksgiving this year, since we're seeing mine for Christmas. We live really far away from out families.2. In my family, we traditionally did Turkey on Thanksgiving, Roast Beef on Christmas and Ham on Easter. FI's family just mainly does turkey. Recently, I've been celebrating with my dad on Christmas eve, and we've had homemade lasagna.3. ?

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? It's complicated and changes each year because each year I have to work either t-day or Christmas. This year I work t-day, so we'll most likely go to my mom's before work and eat (and take lots of leftovers) and he'll go then to his fam. Christmas morn we'll do lunch (my mom always cooks early) and eat lightly (again, take lots of leftovers) and then go with his fam. I hope they do bowling again this year! His mom's side of the fam does something either Christmas eve or some other day around it. 2. Turkey or Ham Chicken. I prefer it over either. 3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until The local radio station starts playing non-stop Christmas music from November 1st until Christmas. I love it!

  • Christmas is tricker.  I skipped Christmas.  Last year we did: Christmas Eve is my mom's side.  Christmas morning FI's side.  Christmas lunch/afternoon my dad's side.  Christmas later afternoon/evening FI's family.  I'm not sure what we'll do this year.

  • I guess I should answer my own poll...1. So far, we don't (hence the poll). His family is local to us, my family is 5 hours away in Nashville. For thanksgiving I go to Nashville and stay with my family, he stays up here with his family. My bday is christmas eve, so that's tricky. I leave to go to Nashville a couple days before, H spends xmas eve morning with his family, then drives like mad tomake it down to Nashville so we can spend the evening together, then we both do xmas together and he leaves immediately to do Xmas with his family on the 26th. It's stupid, but since my dad passed away the holidays are really tough on my grandparents, so that's why we've done it like that. It sounds like my family might actually come to us for thanksgiving (5 people), which is awesome, but then H informed me we'll have to invite his family as well (someone that equals 15 people). It's like our wedding all over again.2. Turkey if it's fried, otherwise Ham3. sets off the fire alarm, my sister and I get wasted and call each other the c word (we laugh hysterically when we do this, don't ask), mom screws up a dish and starts crying.

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? Our families live in the same general area. We try to do both.  This year it will be Christmas Eve dinner with his mom, spend the night and do Christmas morning with my family and then afternoon with his dad's family.2. Turkey or Ham Turkey. Always.3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone In my family: gets wasted. In his family: talks smack about winning an euchre game.
  • I think one of these christmas' we're just going to go somewhere the two of us or with my sister and her boyfriend.  I hate the stress of driving everywhere.

  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? not really sure yet 2. Turkey or Ham - turkey!  (and ham sometimes)3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until I get stuck doing all the dishes.
  • 1. How do you balance holidays between families? His family lives in Oregon and we live in Alaska so we don't see them very often. If we are going to see them for a holiday though it is Thanksgiving. I don't travel at Christmas. If we don't go to Oregon we spend Thanksgiving with my family at one of my Aunts houses. Christmas we try to stay home. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. 2. Turkey or Ham Fried Turkey if I get my way. 3. Fill in the blank: It's not the holidays until someone _____ busts out the eggnog!!!
  • After reading some your answers, I'm really happy that both of our families are close.  His mom lives next door and then my family comes to our house, so for Christmas, there is absolutely no driving for us.  TG I go to my families (either my sister's or my Gma's), but that's only 45 minutes away.
  • 1.  We split the day.  Half with his fam and half with mine.  They all live in the same state within an hour of each other, so it works. 2.  HAM ZOMG I LOVE HAM. 3.  It's not the holidays until someone is nagged by Grandma Nugget for an hour straight, and/or Noodle's dad makes a grossly inappropriate remark.

  • I should add that this year we are going to my brother's in Dallas. This is the first Christmas since losing his son, so he wants us to come out there to visit them for the holidays. My parents, my daughters and I are flying out about a week before (since as a teacher I get such kick-ass vacations), and my husband is joining us Christmas Eve.
  • This is going to sound harsh, but well, it is what it is. For those with divorced parents, my solution was to tell them to figure out amongst themselves which holiday I was spending where.  I was not going to pay the price of driving all over town each holiday becuase of their issues/mistake.  If they couldn't figure it out, then I picked where the holidays were spent and no guilt trips would be accepted.  They had their chance to have a say in it.

  • 1) Thanksgiving is the hard one, because its his mom's favorite (Her b-day is actually ON Thanksgiving this year), and that's also the one that my aunt (Who never wants anybody at her house any other day of the year) that lives an hour and a 1/2 away insists on hosting. Also, FI works at the only bank in the world that is open on Thanksgiving, so he's usually WORKING on top of all that. So far we've had years where WE don't see each other, and years where we just skip my family entirely (Though I don't like it). Christmas is easier, the bank is closed, and the 2 fams that have it are 20 minutes apart, so we just start at one and have desert at the other (Though I do tend to insist my fam gets more time at Christmas because Thanksgiving rarely ends up being "fair"). 2) Turkey. Ham is yucky. Sorry, it just is. 3) Its not the holidays until: My mom and aunt get into a fight because my aunt picked all the crust off of the entire pumpkin pie (That my mom made) for herself, leaving the rest of the family w/crust-less pie.

  • Mandy - we went away last year for Christmas, with my mom and dad and my bsc sister...I missed the the hassle and stress of the holidays. It wasn't the same, and not in a good way. I missed our families. That being said, I'm glad we went, because now I know what it's like to go away for Xmas.

  • That's a good way to do aMrs.  I lucked out because, even though my parents are divorced, we all spend holidays together (we also all go camping for a week in the summe together).  FI thinks it's the strangest thing.I wonder how it would work if either of them ever started dating someone?  Hmmm, well, I won't worry about that until it happens.
  • Pumpkin - Christmas sucks when it's not what you're used to that's for sure.  PS. where'd you go? Every single christmas my mom hosted a big dinner for us and her neices and her neices children.  As her neices mom is in Quebec.  There'd be about 20ish of us in our small little house.  Guys on the couch watching Don Cherry's Rockem Sockem, the women in the kitchen cooking and cleaning, and the kids downstairs playing.  Then my mom died and we were all like... "wtf do we do now?"  So christmas sucks these days.  Every year since she passed every christmas has been different and yes it sucks.

  • 1.  We do alternate years.  This year is with my family.  Other than that, it's just dependant on availability.  My Mom's birthday is around thanksgiving every year so it's hard for me to miss that, but often we do - like last year.2.  Ham.  Mmmm ham.  But I love stuffing.  So I suppose it's not all cut and dried.3.  until my Mom gets mad about something related to someone not doing something.
