Urban Wedding Legends?

Re: Urban Wedding Legends?

  • I think the "Catholic" gap is crap too, and I'm also Catholic. I'm getting married in central PA, where the options are few and far between, and I still managed to avoid a gap. But I made that decision. There were plenty of venues I could have gone with that would make a gap. But I sacrificed other things to make sure my guests weren't stopping to eat and get trashed at Fox's Pizza.

  • All told I think ours will be negligible by the time everyone gets back to the hotel to board the bus to get to the reception.  In the meantime they can freshen up or get a drink at the hotel bar.  I doubt they'll have a lot of time to hit the outlets but if they're driving themselves to the reception then perhaps.

  • nd all the reception halls can't start a reception until 5Really? or just the ones at the top of your list? At least in the destination areas and the country club worlds that I know well wouldn't make you start at five. This is pretty foreign to me.
  • I have gotten BEYOND hammered at more than one catholic gap.

  • Agreed fish. Don't make me bring out the evidence of this again. ::references PIP post from last night:: One day this will stop being funny and it will probably never be appropriate.
  • nqb - where on LI is the wedding?

  • Really.  Our reception site is also a restaurant/inn so certain rules apply.  The only other place we liked was a hotel that couldn't guarantee privacy from other guests during the cocktail hour, i.e. my guests would be sipping cocktails while other people were swimming at the pool.  I realize that part of the reason why we have the gap is our choice but I'm confident our guests will be happier this way.

  • gaps are annoying bc you're essentially making your guests devote the entire day to your wedding, but not making the whole day enjoyable for them
  • The one side being you did not compromise on a venue that would pay homage to the time people are giving up to attend your wedding?Weddings are expensive enough to attend and in this economy. Not hosting something at a time where people have nothing else to do but sit and wait in their cars or spend unnecessary money is just blatantly inconsiderate.I think of it more than a shrugging issue. Shrugging over a million wedding party dances is one thing. Sure it is annoying but people still can eat and drink while the thing goes on (and on). Shrugging over poor planning as a hostess is just bizarre.
  • Oh there's plenty of booze at our day.  We got engaged in Spain so our whole reception theme is Spanish, so tapas, sangria, wine, port, and all the booze you can drink will be available during my gap, FI is calling the pre-reception party and is kind of mad he thought of it and won't get to enjoy it all.  I have told him to smile pretty and pics won't take long and we can enjoy our sangria too.If all this sounds pricey, well sometimes when bride asks nicely venue gives.  They only do one wedding a day so they had no problem throwing in a cocktail/app thing.
  • Yeah, ditto fishy about an hour.  I'm good with that.I also don't like having an event that should be 5 hours of my life take up 7 or 8.  I get tired, and that was before I was knocked up.  I love my friends/family, but I don't need to spend the whole day dressed up.Btw, loved my friend's wedding which was short...b/c they ran off to go do it.  Ah, virgins.

  • I respectfully disagree.  Everyone is OOT.  They'll have a place to go and as I've said before it will likely be less than an hour of waiting for the bus.  I know not everyone agrees but I'm okay with that.

  • nqb - I'm not arguing with you, I'm stating why I hate gaps.  To each their own.

  • I don't want to take up 12 hours of my guests day, only for 3 of them to be sitting around some random bar. Hell, I don't want to take up 12 hours of my day with my wedding. My parents were pushing to add an hour to the 5 hour reception, and I blatantly told them that the day would be too long and it would be past my bedtime.

  • It's okay, I've only been to two weddings in my life without a gap.  I'm sure it will be okay.  Everyone's wedding is different.

  • I don't know if I've ever been to one without a gap, but I still hate them. The same way people can hate cash bars even thought they're 'accepted' in their area.

  • I went to a wedding where they were trying to save money on the bar by hosting it for one hour and then closing it. During that one hour, there were no apps. Everybody there got 5 or 6 drinks to last them through the rest of the night. Essentially, everybody got really drunk before dinner.Oh, and we got to the reception 15 minutes early and had to pay for our first drinks. No sign or anything.Wonderful, wonderful people, but that was poor planning.
  • In our circle, there is always a drinks and apps party at the parents or an aunt & uncles house to fill the gap. That is the one thing I like about about how things are done around here. Things I don't see eye to eye on are.... no limos, instead they use big yellow school buses! I do NOT intend on getting on a dirty school bus in my pretty white dress! Not happening! And nobody ever has open bar. I am saving every penny I can to make sure we have an open bar at our wedding! One wedding, the WP (while on the school but) went and stole a ceramic deer from the MOG's yard and brought it to the reception. Then everyone had to sit on it to give a speech or get their pic taken on it to get the B&G to kiss!
  • *bus........... oops, getting tired!
  • I didn't take the time to read through this whole thread, but was the wedding urban legend of the "bridal diaper" mentioned? LOL.Ew. Scary.
  • Yeah, I just think it's funny when brides think that people are going to want to get all dressed up and then go shopping. No matter what there is to do, gaps suck, in my opinion.I agree. There isn't much worse than a long gap, in my opinion. I don't even really mind cash bars but I don't think I would bother going to the reception if there was a long gap.Even meggs's 2 hr cocktail hour would annoy me. Do you really have to take pics for 2 hours?
