Did Anyone Else Go Through This?

This is a ridiculously superficial question, just to warn you.I'm obsessed with my handwriting. It has to be perfect (to me) or I feel like I need to re-write things. I did this all through college with my class notes (which is probably why I learned what I did.)Anyway, I hate the way I write my new last name. I've had 20 or so years to perfect my old name. The new one sucks. How does one gracefully go from G to T in cursive??Did anyone else go through this with their new last names or am I a freak? "All of the above" is also an option.I apologize for the LJish question.

  • Yeah, I don't care much about my handwriting, but my new last name starts with the worst letter ever for aesthetic purposes.

  • I've been practicing since we got engaged. I ALMOST have it down to where it looks like it belongs there. I just hate it because it's so short. All my names (4 of them) have 2-3 syllables. FI last name is only one. It doesn't fit.

  • I'm OCD like that too.  I throw away entire sheets of paper and re-start if I don't like my handwriting.  I have been practicing writing my new last name and do not like how I make a cursive capital L at all.  You are not a freak.

  • your signature? or actually just handwriting your new name?i didn't have to change my signature at all luckily as it's just a big scribble. :)i am not sure if i have even hand written my new name though.. then again i'm a lazy biitch and have only sort of changed my name (i.e. banking etc)
  • I have totally been thinking about that. FI has a polish name that does not lend itself to a quick signature in my book. My current last name I can get away with a quick signature that looks nice. I am all about having a nice signature, so I am sure in the next few weeks when I have to start doing all the name change stuff, I will be in the same boat as you. I'm a freak because I can't wait to sign a new SS card, my old one has my "signature" from when I was like 10, with bubbles over the four i's instead of dots.
  • You may be a freak, but so am I then. I work for my FBIL and have to sign his name occasionally.  I used to try to sign it like his, but then worried that when I was signing it as my name it'd look like his version of the name and not mine, so I stopped trying to imitate his signature. I'm already worried about how my new name is going to look when I sign it.  I've heard of people practicing before they get their marriage license so it looks nice.  I think I'll be that person.

  • I'm kind-of opposite. I've tried writing my future new last name and it is a lot easier to write in cursive. Now, I write my existing last name like crap. I worry more that Dudley will sound weird with my first name. There is kind of a rhyming effect to it. FB Friends: Do you think my first name will go well with Dudley?
  • I've been married for about a year and a half.  I still don't liek the way I sign my married name.  My maiden name started with a T so I always continued the last letter on to come across and cross the T.  I still have to fight that temptation now that there is no T.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I am a teacher and if my lines on the board aren't perfect I erase and start over. One time I erased over 3 times and my students told me knock it off. lol

  • I thought I was the only one. OMG.  I probably won't take FI's last name for this reason alone.  I hate how my perfect signature has been screwed up by his lame last name.
  • I had to change the way I sign my first name because my new last names first letter doesn't flow well with the way I used to write my scribble scrabble.  On the plus side, for the first time my signature is actually legible.
  • Not reallly, but kind of. What bothers me more is the fact that a year later I still write my maiden name as often as not. WTF. When will I change for good? I hate that.
  • My cursive is not like they taught in school, its more of a combo of cursive and printed.  I admitt I can be anal about my handwriting, if I don't like how something looks that I write, I will do it over. as for G to T in cursive, loop the tail of the G and swoop up to a straight line and cross.  That took a lot of thought, hard to explain cursive without showing someone.
  • I hate signing my first name (seriously, you all go try writing Jessica in cursive.  It does NOT flow).  I LOVE signing my last name, it flows perfectly.  FI's last name?  No.  Good thing I don't know if I'm taking it or not.

  • Ditto lanner - I stopped trying to write out the letters of my last name a long time ago.  As a result, I would guess that my new last name will look suspiciously like my current one does.
  • Not crazy!  I am trying to figure out how to sign a pretty W, but we are also still deciding if we are actually going to change my last name, it's really expensive for me because of my profession and licenses, so, we will see.
  • This is funny, Vogt.  I am obsessed with neat handwriting.  It's not official unless it looks perfect...or at least that's what I think.  I've just recently started writing my new last name because I just got my new bank cards and driver's license and it's tough.  And my new last name is ridiculously long.
  • I am trying to perfect signing my new last name. I can't seem to make it fancy enough.

  • I like my FI's last name vs. my own....also easier to write
  • I would probably make them non continuous.  If my letters won't connect prettily I do this.  It will look strange at first.

  • This is horrible, but I miss my last name because my signature was beautiful. Perfectly symmetric, with ascenders in pretty matching places. My maiden name is HIDEOUS. I can't make a cursive "v", and it's a short name, so it's not even with my first name. I've actually take to writing my old married name on some stuff because it's prettier. I'm the pettiest woman on the face of the earth. Good news though! My handwriting OCD will be corrected in 14 short days, as my new last name is one letter shorter than my first, but the upper case "W" takes up the space of that extra letter in my first name, so my signature will be pretty again and all will be right with the world!
  • Yeah my new last name starts with a "Q". That's the letter everyone skips in cursive because it's not important/common. I miss my "M"
  • Normally, I use my initials to sign things, and they flow right together.  NOw, I have to figure out a way to go from M to W.  Mmmmhm.
  • FB Friends: Do you think my first name will go well with Dudley? ok, now I'm thinking your name is Mudley.
  • ME!!! Look at my last name. Then try to write all those e's in curvise. I only sign receipts in cursive, so when I print it's not an issue, but still. And yes, I'm anal about my penmanship. When you have to take a class specifically for writing as an Interior Design student, you get a little picky.
  • Haha nope. My name is definitely not Mudley.
  • I am going from a T to a B.  I hate making a T in cursive...so sometimes I don't
  • I have to admit though I will miss my initials....CMT
  • My new initials will be RAW. Ahhhhh yeah.
  • Mudley Dudley--you name is not going to rhyme.  It will sound really cute, which you can definitely pull off.  It will fit your adorableness.
