Who's watching the Olympics?

So did you see the 400 free style race?  Where the guy from South Korea got DQ?  I don't get it?  How was that an early start?

Re: Who's watching the Olympics?

  • I didn't see it and apparently neither did the commentators. The funny thing about the Olympics to me is that watching people in the peak of their athleticism will glue me to the couch for two weeks eating delivery pizza because I don't want to the grocery store and risk missing anything. I'm currently 100% the opposite of what I am watching.
  • Well apparently it got overturned because no one else saw the early start either.

Yup, h and FIL were just replaying it in slow mo. They don't see it either, like the commentator said, it just looked like a really good start. Crazy.

  • I love watching the swimming events.  They are mostly pretty tight races.

  • I will be surprised as shiiit if Phelps manages to get gold in the medley. He's doing awful.

  • I'm clicking back and forth between NBC and msnbc. FI wants to watch the fencing that just came on.

  • No, it wasn't. You guys just had the qualifier. We're about 6 hours ahead of you. Sorry.
  • Im pissed. I'm watching and our first coast news decided to show who won events that won't be on until tonight on the bottom of the screen. Major spoilers.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • Yeah, if you don't want spoilers don't go to Yahoo.com They pretty much give it away in the headline, and then say "spoiler alert" on the link to the article. Not very effective at alerting me to spoilers : /

I'm definitely watching the websites and Facebook pages I'm going to. I just can't believe they put it on the bottom of my tv screen like a weather update. Wtf.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • Hike, that's stupid. Our news used to give a warning so you could mute.
  • Hike, I saw that on Yahoo too. I was pissed thinking I'd missed the event until I realized it wasn't being played til tonight, and now I'm annoyed that I know the ending. I should just stay off the Internet.

But on the plus side, I got my cable working.
  • Ugh!   We're watching live in the UK, so I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  But I totally know who wins:-)

  • Sesh- I was wondering if you saw that too. I don't normally get piissed off enough to call a news station but I did. He told me they were sorry and they are "trying" to make sure they don't post the banner again. Their Facebook page is blowing up with complaints.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • "Trying"? How hard is it to not run a banner? Just remove the damn feed.

    Dumbasses.

  • You guys can basically NOT go anywhere on the internet. I see CNN is showing the results on the front page as well.
  • In other news, volleyball is amazing. I can't imagine how much all that falling hurts!
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • Jesse, I totally remember things being on live in previous years. it's like NBC's trying to pad their ratings or something-- which is BEYOND ricockulous.
  • And tonight they will have commercial breaks every 5 minutes that are just as long as the actual Olympics.

They must want all the big ticket events to be on during prime time. All about making money. Bummer for us though.

  • Thank god European networks are set up differently. We watched it straight through without any commercials.

Jesse, that's one of the things that really upsets me about the way the Olympics are set up-- they sell the rights to ONE network in each country and that ONE network has the entire shebang and no one can do anything about it. I wish they were a little more open with this.
  • I didn't know that about the networks, snippy. I was wondering why only NBC was playing it.

And seriously. I loved the opening ceremony last night but I could have gone to bed way earlier if they just cut out the commercial crap.
  • Yeah, it works just like the NFL or any other regulated sports event. The rights to air are purchased by a network and that's it. I believe NBC bought them again after Beijing so they are all we have in the US for another decade, I think.

How long did the opening end up going?
  • Snippy- I was still up after 11 east coast time and went to bed. It was still going on.

  • I was ready to give up during the As, and then the R-Ts. It would suck to be one of the first nations to walk and then have to stand for the rest of them. No wonder the swimmers didn't go.
  • I was actually surprised during the country walk-ins last night. It took an hour, tops , for everyone to come in. I really think it's just the way we cover it that makes it FEEL like a million hours.
