Seating Chart Question

How did you make your seating chart? Not like at the wedding (I am using escort cards and all that) but I mean when you were actually CREATING the seating chart, how did you do it?

Did you draw tables on a huge posterboard and use a marker? Or cut out everyone's names and tape them on so you could move them around? Did you use some kind of awesome computer program I dont know about??

For some reason I am having a hard time picturing the best way to do this...

Re: Seating Chart Question

  • Cut out names on pieces of paper, couples I left on the same piece of paper. I didn't draw tables, I just grouped them on my dining room table in groups of 8 to 10 people. It was really easy that way.

I tried doing it in a notebook for about 5 seconds but got sick of having to cross people off and start over.
  • We used place cards. They had the person's name on them with table number they were supposed to sit at. They simply picked them up at the door when they came in.

While we were planning everything out, we just wrote out all the names and table numbers on paper according to how they were going to be set up at the reception venue.
  • I used Martha Stewart Weddings' seating chart tool. You click and drag the tables to where you want them in the room, then click and drag parties from your guest list to the tables. Super easy.
  • I used the RSVP cards.  For people that were unable to walk to a mailbox and drop off a self-addressed stamped envelope, I just wrote on paper.  Today, when we make our final payment we pick up an actual seating chart from the hall.

FMIL finished putting her tables together Tuesday night in 2 hours and she had to seat about 100 people.

  • I find it interesting that no one suggested TK's tool.

Sort of telling about the quality Laughing

I was wondering the same thing.  That's what I use!  It does have its glitches, but it's great since I can arrange everyone and just have my mom logon from 600 miles away to make sure all her friends are where she wants them!

  • I am using weddingwire's tool. I actually signed up just to use the tool. As we get RSVPs back I enter them in the tool and then will make the seating chart when they all come in.
  • I don't like any of the wedding planning tools on computers.  I'm a major tactile learner and I have to hold it in front of me.

Actually, the weddingmapper site I use seems to have better wedding planning tools than the knot but I don't use them.

  • We don't have RSVPs back yet (invites just went out today, yay!!), but I'm going to use Excel.

I can put in the guest names in lists, and then move people around as necessary.

  • I am going to use the Martha Stewart Weddings one.  I already have my whole guest list on their and arranged by who is invited with who.

I've been playing with it to see how we want to lay out our venue - and will probably use it for seating purposes too,

Yes, it can be glitchy - but I haven't had any real trouble.

There aren't consistent problems with it, just temporary ones.  Same with the guest list manager.  Every once in a while you can't save changes or load the seating chart or something like that.  But that's it.

  • We just used the actual response cards and grouped them into tables -- easy to move around and regroup as necessary. Once I was done, I typed up a simple list to send to the calligrapher for the escort cards.
  • I've been using the guest list manager from The Knot and I like it!

  • I'm with some PPs and I initially wrote names down on a scrap piece of paper, then arranged them in groups.  Now, since I have a final headcount and some people aren't bringing their S/Os like I assumed they would, I typed up all names on a spreadsheet (Google doc) and grouped them that way.  Its easier for me to rearrange names like this (just cut and paste), and I can do this remotely (at work, etc.).
  • I put all of the "yes" names into a spreadsheet, then put them into groups of 8. It was easy that way b/c I could change my mind by easily cutting and pasting names, and I could see all of the guest list at once. Once I had that decided, I got a diagram of how the tables would be laid out at the venue, and just plunked each group down at the tables. It was actually kind of easy.

  • I tried using TK's seating chart tool, and it was fine, but H thought it was too hard to have to login to check it out, so then I just did everything in Excel.  That was easiest for emailing to H and MIL for approvals and corrections.

This is what I did.  It was easy.
