Escort Cards for Mrs.

Each guest is getting their own escort card (which will indicate their entree choice)...for the Mrs...is it proper etiquette to put:

Mrs. Joe Schmoe

or

Mrs. Sally Schmoe

FMIL said that using the later would indicate that she's a widow...so I just wanted to double check that Mrs. Joe Schmoe (I guess really it'd be Joseph, lol) is correct.

I'm considering the ceremony/reception to be semi-formal.
TIA

Re: Escort Cards for Mrs.

  • I did "Mrs. Sally Schmoe"...I dont' knwo if it's right or not, but that's what I did.

I don't know - "Mrs. Joe Schmoe" looks weird to me.  it's fine if it's "Mr. & Mrs. Joe Schmoe" - but that is personal taste not proper etiquette

I would go with "Mrs. Sally Schmoe" only because I think "Mrs. Joe Schmoe" could be confusing if people looked at it incorrectly. They might think "Mr. Joe Schmoe" had two cards.

Personally, I wouldn't be looking for my husband's name, I would be looking for my own. I think it would simply be easier to use the woman's first name.

  • I would consider our reception to be semi-formal and we went around this problem by doing full first and last names.  It still looked nice :)

[QUOTE]Personally, I don't think I'm using titles. I addressed my invitations formally (Mr. and Mrs. John Smith), but I think for escort cards I'm doing "Susan Smith" and "John Smith". It seems like less of a headache and I don't think people will take offense. Especially since the last family wedding of FI's we went to, they didn't have assigned tables/escort cards.

    This.

Also I'm not sure of the "Mrs. Sally Schmoe" indicating a widow.  My grandmothers are both widows, and I address all of their cards:  Mrs. John Smith.  It may be a generational thing.
  • We didn't use titles.

  • Ha, I don't know why I didn't think of no titles. Thanks!
  • Heh.  I was looking at the opposite way and didn't know why you thought of titles.

The only titles I might include if you thought someone might be picky about it would be Dr., but even then I would probably leave it off since this isn't a business function.

  • Mrs. Joe Schmoe is appropriate for a woman currently married to joe schmoe and a woman who is the widow of joe schmoe.

however, if you have a married couple where the bride kept her name, i would not do Mrs. Sally Schmoe, but rather Ms. Sally Schmoe, since "Mrs." signifies she's married to a man with the last name Schmoe.  and actually, "Ms." is always acceptable although some married women really like Mrs.
  • I am not using titles as well, but if I were, i would use her own name.  I agree that she will likely look for her name rather than her husbands.  I don't think it is poor etiquette at all.
