Drinking

So I was reading the post below about the girl's mom recommending rum and coke as her "signature" drink.  A lot of people were down on that because it was so "ordinary" so I was wondering how many of you go out and drink extraordinary drinks on the regular.  Honestly, unless I am in a bar with expert bartenders (which is often not the case at weddings) I am going to stay away from a specialty drink and reach for a gin and tonic.

I drink higher end martinis and the like only in bars where I know that they will make it right.  A bad martini is a crime.  Additionally, I am not a fan of sweet fancy drinks.  Also, if it was a nice rum, you could always drink it on the rocks or neat.  So what says you when it comes to drinking?

  • Well, Vally and Kentucky, I guess that means that you aren't drinking hard alcohol, eh?

I like Rum & Cokes.... It's a good go to drink that usually can't be messed up.

I almost always drink beer or go to bars/restaurants that specialize in beer. If I'm at a "regular" bar and their beer selection is lacking, to say the least, I order something that's hard to screw up, like a gin and tonic. (This happened to me two weeks ago - I was at a bar near my house and the happy hour special was $3 well drinks. I got a whiskey sour that was AWFUL - almost all cheap sweet and sour mix. I made FI drink it, then I got a gin and tonic and it was much, much better.)

If I'm at a fancy cocktail bar, I'll do whatever looks good on their specialty cocktail list. Ditto if I'm at a bar with a great slelection of scotch or tequila - straight up or neat is fine in that case.

At a wedding... well, I'm not paying for it, so trying one drink wouldn't hurt if someone's signature was a vanilla-pumpkin martini or something. But in general, I'm not one for very sweet drinks.

I do agree that a "signature drink" shouldn't be just a well drink, though.

  • I almost always drink wine, but if I do have liquor it's usually a basic vodka and cranberry.
  • If I'm not drinking beer, I love a good spicy Bloody Mary... don't know what category that falls in to though.
  • Merlot or beer.... but my favorite martini is called a "naughty schoolgirl" at the local sushi place.  It is pomegranate vodka, some juices, and redbull, with crushed nerds lining the rim and a blow pop sucker.  Its fun!

Me too. Unless there's champagne. I LOVE champagne.
If I am drinking hard liquor, it's typically something with tequila.  But I guess tequila shots as your signature drink at your wedding would not be classy, right?
  • msmery-that was what I was thinking when I saw the post.  I will drink wine but not if it is Golden Gate (sorry, but that stuff is horrible) so if I have to go with somehting else, then a rum and coke, might be the way to go.

If your signature drink is something that is difficult to make, then it might suck in the long run because the bartender may not be good at it or there may be too many people waiting on it.  Why does a signature drink have to be something exotic?  I would be perfectly happy drinking some Zaya rum with a splash of coke or, even better, over ice rather than some crazy martini drink that is a little out there for me.

Vally, for you, of course I am buying.

  • Usually beer or wine, but if I'm in a hard alcohol kind of mood I always go for a vodka tonic.

  • I no longer drink at all, but when I did, it was always Captain and diet. If we did have a signature drink at our wedding, that would probably be it, because all of my friends/people from college/cousins my age would recognize that as my go to. I don't think it's boring, I think it's delicious, and a large step up from the amaretto sours that used to be the only thing I would order when I first turned 21.

I don't drink, never really have.  But I always thought a signature drink was one that was different than the normal alcohol you were serving (like a special martini or mixed drink with fruit).  People could still order a Rum and Coke if they wanted it.... I dunno, very possible I have only a mild understanding of drinks.
  • Depends on my mood, the location and the occasion.  I usually drink wine at restaurants, beer at bars, unless it's a girls' night out or pre-dinner drinks, then it's hard alcohol.
  • First, I'll drink anything that is free. Bought for me, or if people are just giving booze away, I'll drink it.

Secondly, if there is something on special that isn't super fruity or sweet, I'll drink it.

Thirdly, if the above two options aren't available, I'll have a bacardi diet, a bud light, or a glass of red wine.

Fourthly, Ill drink whatever is in my glass.

  • ummm, all of the above and depends on the situation, where I am, what I'm eating if at all, and what kind of mood I'm in.

I drink spirits and mixers mostly at home because they're easy. I drink margs when I'm eating Mexican food. I drink whiskey/whisky over ice if I'm in the mood, and often with steak. I'll drink a Manhattan if I'm just in the mood for the taste of it. I actually don't drink fancy martinis unless I'm out with a bunch of girls and they all order them. fancy martinis are not something I'll ever pick as a first choice.

    I'm a beer girl.

  • When I used to exclusively drink liquor, it was always some fruity girly business (Pixie Stix, Jolly Rancher, etc). Now I only drink beer and can't handle fruity mixed drinks. I do, however, still drink frozen mixed drinks from time to time (specifically dacquiris and Pina Colada's). And I will NEVER turn down a White Russian or a Mudslide. EVER.
  • I guess the "signature" drink at the party I am throwing is a margarita.  It should pair well with the chips, salsa, tacos and tamales.  The cupcakes?  Not so much.

    Drink menu:
    Corona
    Corona light
    Wine (red or white)
Tequila (Cazadores Reposado, one of my favorites)
    Cadillac margs - rocks
Reg margs (no triple sec or Grand Marnier) - rocks
Frozen Strawberry margs  (we've got a cool machine!)
Pepsi, diet pepsi, 7-up or water

I hope it goes over well.

  • I like so many different types of beer and wine that I am rarely at a loss for something to drink from those categories. The only time I ever drink hard alcohol is when I make something with vodka and a drink mix at home, or when there's something really special that I can get for cheap. Like the time Poli's bartender friend made me a lychee martini.

I do think that rum and coke makes a pretty crummy signature drink. Partly because I hate rum and cokes, and partly because it's pretty college.
