Pet Lovers

I don't post here a lot, but work is super slow and thought I might start an interesting/funny thread.

Is there anything you do for your pet that people think you are crazy for?

My husband and I narrate for our dog Molly. She is just the cutest little thing and I would love to know what's going on her head, but since that's not possible, we make up her thoughts for her.

Also we buy those poopy bags that are colorful with all the designs on them so she can poop in style. She is a diva. By.all.means.

  • My fiance and I also narrate for our puppy and refer to ourselves as his mom and dad.
  • I took Willard on a cross-country road trip a few years ago. It was six weeks long, 10,000 miles, lots of camping and backpacking, just the two of us.

Everyone thought I was kind of crazy to do that. But I did that for me as much as for him.
  • I make peanut butter ice cubes for Fred.

I put some peanut butter and water in a pot and melt it all down and freeze it in ice cube trays. She loves them as a treat during the summer.
  • Awww that sounds like fun! They do make the best company, because they don't talk back, and they are great listeners!
  • We don't usually go around doing this in front of other people, but we sing songs about our cat.  Like, if we hear a song and it's stuck in our head, we'll replace certain words with kitty or meow.

For example, instead of Boy George's "Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon, you come and go you come and goooooo".... I sing "kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty chameleon....you meow and meow, you meow and meowwwww".  That's just one example, but pretty much any song will do.

  • Haha Jajph thats funny! Where did you find that idea? I'm always trying to keep Molly happy but I am afraid the Milk Bones are becoming boring!

  • Hmmmm, nope. Don't get me wrong, my dog leads a pretty cushy life. Okay, maybe some people would think I am crazy for covering her up with a blanket at night during the winter. But she's a greyhound, and we keep the thermostat at 58 at night. That is too cold for her.
  • Hahaha we do that too Danieliza!
  • I dress my dog for halloween and we sings songs with names in them and replace it with his name.

But I totally but the little bags, his is crossbones because hes bad-ass max. :P

Gah! We do this!  James Tiberius's song is "Fat Bottom Kitty You Make the Rockin' World Meow!" (to the tune of Fat Bottom Girls)

and Ming the Merciless's song is "Sweeet feeline! pounce! pounce! pounce!" (to the tune of Sweet Caroline)

Ming is a loud cat, he meows a lot, so we also have converstions with him.

    That's awesome and hilarious!
  • Peanut butter ice cubes?  Must. try. this.  Nala loves peanut butter in her kong.

  • I also add my fiance's last name to Huxley's (my dog) all the time, and I make up songs about him.  My sister admited that she makes up songs about her cat, too.

  • We also gave her a middle name, when she is doing something she is not supposed I sound like my mom "Molly Ann Last name get your behind over here!"
  • We're looking for apartments, and when I see the ones that don't allow dogs, I tell my fiance they don't allow babies!  When they do allow dogs, I get all excited and say they allow babies!

Oh, you haven't met my Max. He DOES talk back.... He also packs heat and hides it in his bed, but that's another story.

Max is our new puppy, and we have bought him all kinds of toys imaginable - when we go to obedience school, we go down the toy aisle (its at PetSmart) and let him pick out a toy.

My other dog, who died in December, traveled everywhere with me. She hated stuff on her feet and shirts, etc., but I bought them for her anyway - it made me giggle. She just suffered the indignity with grace. I have a really funny picture of her in a lei, and one in a way too tiny Santa "cape" and booties.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • hahaha Missy he packs heat?! I'm interested! I am so sorry about your other little one, but I am glad you have a new one to keep you company. They are like babies and they love you unconditionally. Uh they are just the best!

  • Our dog, Lilly the Maltese, is our baby.  We talk to her all the time and also narrate her thoughts.  And of course we are mommy and daddy too.  We have been looking at condos and we always find ourselves saying things like oh Lilly would love this place, or not like it because of the stairs or whatever.  I love having a furbaby!

  • We refer to Shy and Jessie as our "girls." Jessie has a middle name, because she gets in trouble a lot. They both have my last name, because we're feminists like that.

Warning, this will be gross. Don't read if you don't like gross.

I had to make a special appointment with my vet to learn how to administer rectal valium during a seizure. Not cute at all, or fun. But after that I looked at Shiloh and said, "You better think I'm a damn good mom."

  • Shelly, those songs are GREAT! We also sing songs about Lola...narrate her thoughts...refer to her as our child...we know we're pathetic, but that's alright. And apparently we're in good company with all of you. DH's parents are totally in on it and refer to themselves as her grandparents
  • My dog Loretta is a rescue dog and was abused before I got her, so I baby her like crazy. I call her my little baby girl, I make up names for her and songs about her. When she sleeps on the couch, she has her own little blanket that I cover her up with. My fiance thinks I'm crazy, but I can't help it, she's like my baby, I love her to death.
    imageAnniversary
  • FI and I do the same thing! We narrate for little Koopa (our 1 year old Japanese Chin/Pomeranian) and we refer to each other as Mommy and Daddy. We had him groomed the other day and asked the groomer to give him a Mohawk. I even style it with doggy mouse. (Picture attached.) Koopa is pretty spoiled and I think he knows it too.

jasmine, that's how Maggie got hers. It's not too bad, and it works REALLY fast that way - gets into their bloodstream really quickly. Promise. I only had to do it twice, but neither time was bad. They wrapped tape around the syringe for me so it wouldn't go up too far.
ETA: that's how she got hers at the end. She'd been on phenobarb for years prior but had been weaned off.

  • Missy- We are on pheno and bromide, but she clusters. I've done the rectal 6 times now. It's not too bad, just really hard when she is thrashing, and she releases her bowels during a grand mal, which adds to the gag factor. I've gotten the hang of it now though.
    image
  • Oh, yeah, that would be bad. Maggie's were never grand mal. I'm so sorry you're going through that.

I just remember the scared look she'd give me, like "mom, please help me" and it would break my heart.  And now I need to think about something else...
