I don't want to miss my bff's birthday party....

My best friend is planning her own birthday party and what is happening is exactly why I don't think people should be planning parties for themselves and expect others to pay for it.

She chose something extremely expensive. Well, for me it is. It's a milestone birthday and I love her, so I was expecting to be shelling out a good deal of money... I even told her how excited I was and I have been saving up... but what she is planning is just too expensive for me.

A mutual friend let us know that is what she us planning via facebook. So far it's been met with comments along the lines of... "wait, it's going to cost how much?"

The thing is, some of these people might be able to pull together the money to go, but I don't think I will.

If you were in her position, would you be very upset with your best friend for not attending?

Also, do you think I should talk to her about the price? Or should I just say something like, "Hey, I heard what you have planned. Although I've been saving up, it's still not in my budget. Can I please take you out to dinner another night somewhere else, instead?"

I'm just so upset to have to miss her party, but there is no way I can swing that kind of money and, of course, a huge part of me is SO embarrassed to have to admit that everyone else.
