how to drink tequila?

Totally NWR, but I know there's a lot of  younger people around. My sister and I are getting a cousin's son a bottle of Patron for his 21st birthday. I've never been a fan of tequila, but when I used to have it on occasion, we'd drink it with salt and lemon. Is that still what people do? If it is, we'll stick some fancy salt and a couple of lemons in the bag too. Or is Patron more a sipping tequila that stands on its own?

Re: how to drink tequila?

  • Lime, not lemon.  Definitely.  But, Patron Silver is really a great tequila, so you could just sip it.

  • Lick, slam, suck.

I wouldn't say that patron is a sipping tequila by any stretch of the imagination.

I've had a pomegranate tequila that was a sipping tequila, but patron should be shot. With training wheels.

  • I've always done shots of tequila with limes rather than lemons but that was when I did shots - usually now I put it in my maragaritas

  • Some people sip and some take shots. Patron is far better than Cuervo Gold, but I wouldn't sip it myself, and neither will most other 20-somethings.

And limes, not lemons. If its going to be part of a 21st party, you might even want to slice up the limes first. Drunk 21 year olds don't need to be fussing with paring knives while others are yelling for shots.

agree with fishy that Patron is not a sipping tequila. the only decent sipping tequila I've found, I had to buy in Mexico because it wasn't available in the states.

  • I would never sip tequila. Yuck!  I don't really do shots either so I'm not a good person to ask... but include limes, not lemons.

  • I always shot it with lime and salt. While sipping tequilas do exist, I don't consider Patron one of them.

Unless it's quite a fantastically wonderful and delightful tequila, sipping tequila is just silly.

Lick the salt off your hand, slam the shot, bite the lime.

I used to be able to do tequila shots like a champ.  But I had my first one in about 3 years a couple of weeks ago, and it almost killed me. Or at least, reminded me that I am definitely not 21 anymore.

  • I haven't had a shot in a long time because they make me gag now - this may be due to the fact that when I order a shot in a bar they put it in one of their glasses and it's really like 3 shots instead of one

  • Got it -- lime, not lemon! I don't know -- maybe I'm confusing it with something else we used to do shots of, or maybe back in the day we didn't know any better and used lemons Tongue out
  • When I was in college I would have taken it with a prune, and I would have believed it was the best way.

You might be thinking of a lemon drop, which is vodka, lemon juice and sugar.

Me too.  Just thinking about the amount of alcohol I consumed in college makes my liver hurt now. I thought I was so cool by having shot competitions with random people at bars.  Yeah, glad I'm past that stage now.

Definite possibility. I remember really liking lemon drops. We also used to drink Kamikazes -- do people still drink them? But that was after I graduated.

In college, we mostly drank grain punch out of clean trash cans. Seriously.
  • Tequila is traditionally sipped.  The only people you'll catch shooting/slamming it in Mexico are tourists ;)  Whether or not you consider Patron fine enough to sip is probably a personal preference...

I live in Mexico and happen to enjoy tequila a lot - I'd sip Patron Silver, etc. if it were offered to me.  As to the limes, they're traditionally squeezed and the juice served in a separate glass.  It's nice to take a sip of the lime juice after sipping the tequila.

    Have fun ;)
  • I don't care where you live or how much tequila you ingest.

Most people I know, including myself, wouldn't ever sip tequila unless it was a very fine tequila.

    Otherwise, you shoot that shitt.

I went on a tour of a tequila factory in Mexico a few years ago, and the tour guide basically said that any tequila sold in America is crap, including Patron.  We got to taste some their tequila, and I could definitely tell a difference.

  • We have good friends of the family (Raymundo played the harp at my wedding) and they all grew up in Mexico, and LOVE tequila, and even they won't sip Patron, and they LOVE tequila. They do have a crazy selection of other tequila that they'll sip, but patron is not on that list.

  • I'm not sure where or how the tradition of shooting/slamming tequila started, I just know that I've never seen a Mexican drink it that way.  But a Mexican also wouldn't order crappy tequila to sip it.  So I guess we're even.  I think the crappy tequila is mostly intended for export...

because as we said earlier, American tequila = crap, Mexican tequila = good. of course an actual Mexican in Mexico wouldn't slam it, because they are inherently drinking better quality tequila than any American can easily acquire.

hahaha true story! Except I don't care how fine the tequila is... I'm shooting it! Or pouring it into my marg on the sly if I've already had a few too many which happens more often than not!
  • You can get good tequila in the States, it's just more expensive than Cuervo.  They export the good stuff too.

But I would imagine that if someone goes to the liquor store to buy tequila to slam it or mix it and sees bottles ranging from $20-200, they'll probably pick the cheaper stuff.  So the crappier tequila is more popular in the States simply because of the way it's drunk.

  • I agree with the lick, slam, suck, but after enough shots, you can do them straight.
