how to drink tequila?

Re: how to drink tequila?

  • I really do think Patron Silver is good, but I'm no expert.

And Pooh, I don't think Expat is being snotty if that's what you're implying.  She lives in Mexico, so she's just saying what she's experienced where she LIVES.  Y'know, you're not around much, but when you're here, you're a real snot sometimes.

  • Call me crazy, but I don't think that expat lives in an area where a lot of native mexicans hang out.

    BUT I COULD BE WRONG.

  • Thanks, Kiki.  I was just answering the question from my experience down here.  Not sure why I got the snark...
  • Can't say I've been to Expat's house, but she has to be more familiar with Mexican culture than I am.

I actually live in a suburb of Monterrey.  No beach or tourist areas anywhere near, not even by car.

The ratio of Mexicans to Americans where I live is probably 99 to 1...  And I'm married to one.  So this is about as authentic as it gets ;)
  • In my tequila drinking heyday, I was living in Germany, so I have no idea how Mexicans drink tequila, only Germans, American expats and US soldiers.

  • Depends on where she lives.

If I spend a weekend in Cancun, that doesn't make me an expert in Mexican culture. It makes me a person with experience in a culture that isnt mine.

If I could make a shot in the dark based solely on the comments expat says about how she lives, I doubt she's in the trenches with these people.

BUT I COULD BE WRONG. I'm not trying to naysay it, but if you ask someone in manhattan about how all americans live, well, that's just silly to take that at face value now, isn't it?

  • People in Manhattan and people in Bumfuck probably drink tequila the same way, though (even if it may be different tequila).
    image
  • I promise you that people in Manhattan and people in bumfuck definitely DO NOT drink tequila the same way.

I know you know this too.

I'll give you that.  I'm definitely not living in poverty as many in Mexico unfortunately are.  But the Mexicans I hang out with aren't any less Mexican ;)
  • Right. Just like the homeless people on the street aren't any less american.

But I bet they eat their dinner differently than I do.

And I bet they drink their booze differently than I do.

And I bet you don't want to put all Mexicans in one grouping of people. At least I hope you don't.

All I did was answer the question of how tequila is drunk, from the traditional standpoint.  Poor people here also drink it in the same way - they just may not be able to afford the best stuff. Or they'll save it for a special occassion and drink something else.   If I were served tequila in someone's home here I'd still sip it and not slam it - no matter how cheap or fine it is.

This thread is odd.  The catty attitudes towards Expat are odd.

    It's just tequila, ffs.

  • I think we all just need a shot of tequilla... to sip or slam ;)

I feel a little lush-like saying that at 8:22AM. Hahaha!

  • For me, the best way to drink tequila, is to put the bottle down, and NEVER pick it up again.

Baaaddddd tequila experience years ago = no more tequila for me....

I love sipping tequila.  If it's Patron, though, sometimes my FI and I will have it on the rocks with a splash of limon to take out some of that nasty taste.  Teh good stuff doesn't need ice or lime (and certainly not salt).
  • I shoot tequila.  You can't find a bottle for cheaper than $45 here so we generally skip the margaritas and make daquiris.

I like shots of tequila in bars.  It's the only hard liquor I can shoot.

I find it sort of humourous that the tequila company that everyone seems to view as being "really good" (where i live anyways) is based out of Las Vegas and not Mexico.  Thats just funny to me.  I don't know anything about tequila though.  I rarely ever drink it except for a random margarita here and there.   I think in my mind, all good tequila comes from Mexico.  In dusty bottles.

Now if anyone wants to start a vodka thread I could contribute more to that.  Not only because its my favorite, but also because I did a three year stint as a homeless Russian, so my experiences with it are allowed to count.

I think that everyone here has a point.  So, I asked my friend.  Her response proves that both expat and fishy are indeed correct.  It took for someone to actually comment on it for me to realize that there was any snarkiness going on in this thread.  I thought that it was just friendly banter.  Everyone knows fishy is a kidder.  I don't know why everyone got all crusty about it.

ETA: this friend has also lived in mexico.

Here is the response when I asked her.

I have been in the company of many Mexicans and witnessed both.  I know there is high quality tequila that can be and is sipped, but it’s also done the other way too.  Or maybe she just hangs out with rich Mexicans that can afford the good stuff…

  • Mandy- I thought it was Pooh being snarky- the hair flip comment- not Fishy as much.  (Although Fishy does seem a little biased against Expat here).
    image
  • I didn't really read it that way.  But, yeah maybe there was something there.  I don't know.  Perhaps I suck at reading tones.

I was confused by the hair flip comment.  I'm not going to lie.

I didn't read it as fischey or pooh being friendly and kidding at all.  I read it as there being some weird bone to pick against Expat for being.... I don't know?  In the land of wealthy Mexicans?  A tequila sipper?  It was nonsensical.

My first reaction was that Fisch was just having a bad night about something totally unrelated and took it out on this thread, and would probably read it today and feel silly for acting like an asshat for no reason.   But that all being kidding banter?  No.

This isn't the first time Expat has gotten attitude for having a more affluent experience with something.  Its like people expect her to apologize for being wealthy or go out of her way to hide it.  That's just her life.  She can share her experiences just the same as the rest of us.

My favorite is Chopin.  Its just perfect.  I also like Absolute and probably drink it the most.   Most of the top shelf ones I'm happy with.  As long as it doesn't have that obvious marker of the cheap crap, I'm a happy girl.

Have you had Three Olives?  Oh my goodness, it is HORRIBLE.  I can't even pinpoint what it wrong with it, its just terrible.  Avoid that like the plague.
