My work has blocked...

Not TK
Not FB
Not YouTube
Not Flickr

They blocked the entire farfing internet. Except work websites. I can't even google anymore. Or check the weather. I work in a basement cubicle. How am I supposed to know that it's raining out?

This has been a hell of a day. I hope others have been better.

  • Man that stinks!  Sorry about that.  I can't believe the knot isn't blocked at my work.  I work in a high school and some college websites are blocked.  It makes no sense.
  • That insane! :( sorry to hear that.

They didn't even give us a warning. It just stopped working. One of the IT people called one of the coordinators to have her try and get to a website to "make sure it's blocked." Really? You couldn't have given us a heads up.

  • My old work did that too.  I often needed to print out directions for our installers and I couldn't get to google, mapquest, yahoo maps, anything.  It was the dumbest thing ever.

  • That is ridiculous! I need my krupar fix. :-(
  • That is just dumb.  Seriously, how do companies operate without the use of any internet?

  • That really sucks :(

    I'm a sad Panda now Manda. :-(

What's ironic is I hadn't even been on any personal websites all day because I was so busy. I didn't notice something was wrong until I tried to access a website to send a client a proposal. That's right, they didn't even think about the fact that some of our work is done on the internet. They blocked everything. So now it's on us to tell them what sites we need access to to do our jobs. Wouldn't it have made more sense to just block FB and other social sites? Instead of the whole damn internet?

    That's too much logic, mk.
  • Know what you need? A smartphone.
  • I have never heard of a work blocking the entire internet. That's just bizarre and messed up.

They're so dumb. And when my boss heard me talking about it he said, "You want to discuss it, let's discuss it."

Ok, well I get that there may be websites out there that you don't want us using during work hours. (Hmmm I see him on FB all the time). But to prevent us from doing our jobs because you all didn't think it through. We can't order supplies. We can't schedule a FedEx pickup (I guess we could if we called them, but why when I can just do it online?). We can't give guests directions. We can't order business cards. The list goes on and on. Really? Not one person thought this all the way through did they? Prime example of putting the cart before the horse. (I think that's the right saying I want there) :-)

Oh i have one, but guess who's basement cubicle prevents her from connecting to data services?

  • That's incredibly dumb. I worked somewhere where they threatened that b/c some people were abusing it. Get an iPad?
  • Honestly, I bet it lasts a week.  I would make sure to try and access as many needed sites as possible, and be a complete PITA saying "oh, and I need access to this site too."

I'd go with "throwing the baby out with the bath water" or "cutting one's nose to spite one's face," personally, mk.  :P

My work blocks anything that sounds porn-y (including Victoria's Secret -- boo), radio stations and all of the shared photography sites.  But FB and twitter, youtube and social media are left on.  Go figure.
  • FI's work has been threatening to do this for awhile. I'm soooooooo glad my company NEEDS the internet because I don't think I could survive! :) I can pretty much do anything and somehow chalk it up to doing "research".

It's not like I'm looking at porn!

I need good job vibes more than ever now that I'm starting to apply so I can move up to the DC area with Lucas sooner rather than later.

  • Yeah Mica when I was teaching Health I used to try googling current articles and things to give my students randomly for assignments.  However whenever we were in the STD unit, or the family planning unit, every search I did came back as "pornography."

  • That's awful!  My work won't block facebook because I work in sales and it can count as "networking".  The 2 I am bummed that have been blocked are Victoria's Secret and The Nest.

I've had similar issues when I was trying to look up gyn stuff.  Believe it or not, a google search is usually faster than a medline search, but work blocks so many of the results.  It's stupid.
  • A company I used to work for did that. I work in the marketing department. They had "tiers" where we could access different things depending on our level and then ask permission for certain sites. I had to ask permission for things like expedia so I could book travel for conferences and trade shows. We DID have google (at our tier) but it was useless because we couldn't get to any of the sites on the results page. The president felt like the internet was a giant waste of time. It was ridiculous.

Yeah, we have anything streaming (like youtube, pandora) blocked because it eats bandwidth. And I often get a "blocked" page for some other random things. Like I was trying to look up information about my local gay pride parada once and it came back as "pornography." But it actually said something like "Pornography: gay and transgender content." <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />

I too find it unacceptable. How am I going to keep track of all you ladies? I'm going to be so lost when I can actually come on at night.

I would just like to know who else they blocked. I know the four coordinatos in our office. My CW called one of the sales managers and told them what was happening and she was going to check with the sales coordinators. The IT guy just said he was given a list of T-Numbers.

I know they blocked FB at one of my old properties because I know people that still work there. I can get around not having FB. I can't even look up the local news.

  • Ugh that sucks, especially blocking everything with no warning!

My customers at Psmart used to get so irate because we didn't have access to anything on the internet, except Petsmart.com. They would also ask me to look up directions for them, or if I had the phone number for another store (just google it) and refused to believe that we didn't have internet access.

School just blocks annoying crap. Fb/twitter is blocked but not youtube. Pandora is blocked for streaming though and now we have itunes installed on the computers. a lot of porn sites aren't blocked (according to students) but most of the computer help forums are blocked for being "unsavory/gamer site".

I didn't know this, but the front desk compters are blocked from internet. How the heck do they print off directions or guests?

That is so dumb. Most people use the internet for their jobs. I couldn't function without google.  I'm really sorry :(
  • That sucks, mk. :( My old work (a bank) only had "intranet" for anyone that wasn't a manager. I would get so bored but would sneak onto my smartphone when I could. Customers always refused to believe that we didn't have internet. My summer job has internet but they have a strict honor code about using it, so I'm too scared to use it for non-work stuff, haha.
