One of the malls near my parents' has this rule, but I think it is only on the weekends after 7.  I think it was a loss prevention strategy and it must be working since it has been in effect for at least 4 years.

Cfas that makes no sense. Teens need places to go with their friends. I naturally assumed that the mall was one of those places.

It is not up to the city to try to enforce some kind of mall curfew on them.

  • If I recall correctly, I started hanging out at the mall unsupervised by an adult when I was 14.  I wasn't doing drugs, either.  Nor did anyone else I know.  We mainly just hung around the clothing stores and bought pretzels.

I can't verify if this is true, but friends of mine who live in MA told me that one of the malls there has banned teenagers walking in groups of six or more after a whole bunch of them started a riot there back in the early 2000's.  Again, can't verify if it's true, just what I've heard.

  • The Levee here has that rule too except it's for anyone under 18. If you're there for a movie and under 18, you must go directly to the theater, no shopping or supporting other Levee businesses. You're also not suppossed to be in groups larger than four or sing or dance without authorization.

Singing and dancing teens give me THE VAPORS.
  • Yeah, the problem is that too many kids have gone into malls, which are the perfect place to cause trouble, and done really heinous things. Flash robs, riots, fights, shop lifting, and general bad behavior. As someone who used to spend 60 hours a week in a mall, I can tell you that I hated seeing any group bigger than 4.
  • I wasn't allowed to go to the mall with just my friends until I started driving.  I was too busy riding horses, though, so I didn't really care.

  • Yup, it clearly states in the rules "no unauthorized singing or dancing". In the skywalk area downtown, one of their rules is that you can only sit on the benches for a specific amount of time. Very strange and specific rules around here.

I do wish that the movie theater closest to my house wouldn't let so many teenagers hang around outside but they do. It's overbearing.

Yeah our mall here has had that in place for a few years. It's helped with the gang violence that was happening. But I get what you're saying about the well-behaved kids, a few bad apples and everyone suffers.

Maybe this is an UO, but I'm really over flash mobs.  They were sort of interesting the first few times, but now they're just old.

  • Good Afternoon my lovelies.

Yay, had a lovely weekend in NEPA enjoying my family and friends.

WTF, my glasses broke this morning and I had to spend my lunch at the optical shop.  A yay came out of this though because now I have an appoinment to get contacts at the end of the month.  I am so over wearing glasses!
  • MI friend was talking about doing a flash mob at my wedding. I'm hoping she forgets or it doesn't work out.

Oh, I can un-vague knot too! This friend of a friend is going all nutty and posting/commenting about how there is no such thing as being an independent. "You need to choose a side and be a republican or democrat!" Blah blah. "America is TWO parties."

    Asshat.
  • Here's my wtf: I have a student who is trying to get a better score on the ACT. A MUCH better score. Well, the test is in three weeks, and said student's parents keep canceling our tutoring appointments for sporting events. Make a decision. Either you want your kid to go see professionals play games or you want your kid to go to a good college! Wtf?

While I get the security reasons for many malls putting curfews and such in place, I kind of feel bad for the kids.  Teenagers usually annoy the piss out of me in general but as someone who was a teenager in a town with not much to do, I think hanging at places like the mall saved me from doing more dangerous/stupid things to occupy to time.

Bay, I agree about the flash mob thing (although that commercial with the guy who broke into a flash mob dance alone still makes me crack up every single time).

I don't have a yay currently, but my WTF: FI and his younger bro have been working for the same company (huge corporate conglomeration that has several offices in and around Boston) for about the same amount of time.  FI has had a few different positions in this company, and did 6 months of 'job shadowing' where he went to different divisions to see what they did, and was a guinea pig in that program.  He also taught himself programming to get a better job within the company.  His brother just got a new job withint the company, and is now "Assistant Vice President".  Granted, the company has SO many AVPs and you're guaranteed to get that title at some point if you stick around a while, but that makes him 2 levels above FI.  I just feel badly for FI.   He isn't a schmoozer and thinks that has something to do about it, but that being said he has never been in very social departments there, while his brother is always hanging out with his CWs.
  • Erin, people who think like that piss me off. I hate it when people choose a party and then become a slave to it. Use your brain! I know this is never going to happen, but I wish the party names would go away and we could just vote for people based on what they're running for.

That is a pretty lame argument against gay marriage.  If you're going to deny someone their civil rights, you should at least try harder than that for a basis to your discrimination.
