Is it too early for a Harry Potter post? (with spoilers!)

So, who's seen it? What did you think?

I thought it was awesome. I love the books and like the movies, but I'm not usually totally wowed by the movies just because they do have to cut stuff out, and books are just better in general. But omg, this was amaaaaaaazing. I want to see it again.  Even though parts of it were so scary!  The whole scene in Bathilda's house had me freaking out, and when Nagini jumped out I just about died. I jumped SO high, as did my friend.

Also sad :( Poor little Dobby, so faithful. Fred and George were in fine form though - even though they were only in the first few minutes, they made an impression.

    1.  What is the cutoff where the movie ends?

    2.  Did they manage to fix all the plot deviations like ignoring Bill and Fleur in the last movie?

  • It ends with Voldemort taking the elder wand from Dumbledore's tomb. Obviously I didn't want it to end, but I also felt like it worked pretty well.

At the beginning, when Bill and Fleur show up to do the 7 Harrys escorting Harry to the Burrow, Bill just introduces himself to Harry. I had a moment of thinking "wait, they don't know each other?!" just because I've read the books, but otherwise it wasn't weird at all.
  • I almost didn't open this thread because I was like "Zomg, spoilers!". But then I realized I had read the books, and I know what's going to happen.

It's too early for me to be awake.
  • Haha, I realize it's silly to talk about spoilers when everyone knows how the story goes, but I also know that some pepole wouldn't want to know, for example, that Nagini jumps out at one point, so I figured I'd give fair warning.

I was rereading the book the other day, and when I got to that part I thought, "If they do it right, that's where they'll make the cutoff."  It's very dramatic and is a really good place to stop it.  I'm glad that's what they did.

  • We're going next weekend - can't wait!  Thanks for the info on the movie.

    Anniversary
  • I went. It was definitely amazing. There were a few things that I wish were done different but it was done very well. I can't wait until the battle. Dobby's death was so sad, I was fighting back tears :[
  • Aleigh, what do you wish had been different?

The only thing that stuck out to me was that the other day someone said they were excited to see the Lovegoods' crazy house, and I agreed, but then I didn't find it anything particularly special. But that's no big deal.

I also thought - and this is in the book too, of course - that I really do not understand why Harry, Ron and Hermione, 3 wizards who can take on Voldemort and Death Eaters, would not be able to avoid being captured by a group of snatchers. And why instead of standing their ground and fighting with magic, they ran away.
  • I saw it last night and I LOVED it! They stayed very true to the books, just moving some parts around like the snitch discovery and such. I cried when they were looking at Harry's parents graves and when Dobby died, so sad :(. I was hoping that they wouldn't kill Hedwig, that she would just fly off, but they just had to do it :(

Didn't they not want to use magic so that the Death Eaters in the MOM couldn't track them?

I wish they would've shown more of the wedding and done Dobby's funeral how they did it in the book. Oh, and I was excited about the sign at the Potters' showing at Godric's Hallow, but they didn't show it. I think that's it.

Edit: I also wanted them to show Dudley telling Harry bye, they rushed the beginning.
  • Any, the Trace had lifted by then though. And they did use some magic - Hermione at least definitely cast a spell over her shoulder while running away - they just didn't stand there and rely solely on magic.

Ah. It's been a while since I've read them. I should probably do that before I go see the movie.
  • My favourite part was the part with gollum.

    I thought the same thing.

I am going to see it on Sunday. Dobby is one of my favorites so I will probably cry for him.

  • I just saw that "RIP Dobby" is trending on Twitter.

Mandy, the gollum part was pretty awesome, you're right.
  • Awe. I haven't looked at facebook yet but I know a few of my friends have probably done that too. Poor Dobby

  • I'm here! I slept in, of course. Let me form my thoughts...

  • Good:

The Malfoy mansion scenes were all very good

The tender moments between Harry and Hermione, Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, and Harry and Ron, and Dobby and Harry. :tear:

What they did with the material they used (more on that momentarily).

That they gave Hedwig a hero's death, instead of killing her in her cage. :tear:

    Dobby's scene.

I liked what they did with the Tale of the Three Brothers.

    Bad:

They left out so much more than I imagined.

Why did Harry/ Runcorn walk like one of his legs was shorter in this movie? It was distracting.

I really thought they could have done more when Nagini came out of Bathilda.

    The wedding was underdone.

The locket scene. While it was accurate, it made me feel oogie.

    Ugly:

    My face when Dobby died.

I have more. These are my initial thoughts.

  • ZOMG I'm here! I slept in!

Okay so.... obviously, as people have said, I thought it was freaking brilliant. AND you can totally tell that JKR assisted with the screenwriting on this one, which was fab.

I LOVED the entire thing and would not change a single thing, don't get me wrong, but these were just some thoughts I had while watching it:

    - I kind of wished they'd done the whole goodbye with Harry and Dudley. That was super sweet in the books and I think neccessary to show that even though they were a bunch of twits, Aunt Petunia and Dud at least, felt something other than contempt for Harry after all this time, kwim?

     - Did not think Xeno Lovegood was anywhere near kooky enough, though I agree with how they cut the scene because the escape as it was in the book was superfluous to the movie's plotline so it worked.

     - LOVED how they did the reading of the three brothers tale. Man that was smart doing it like that instead of having it in live action movie style. It was really, really clever.

     - I fuucking FREAKED at the Bathilda/Nagini part. I was SO worried about that going in but man oh man that was well executed.

     - I can't decide if I absolutely love the style of the patronuses or if I prefer the ones used in previous films.

     - I'm still undecided on Kingsley. I'm not sure the accent and laid-backness works, especially when he delivered the "Ministry has fallen, Scrimgeour dead. They are coming" line. I saw that being much more ominous and forceful in my head, and I'm a bit irked they didn't use his lynx patronus to deliver it, but for people who haven't read the books, I suppose that worked better.

     - I think Tom Felton did a great job during the part(s) at Malfoy Manner, you can tell he's scared and wavering from his "dark side" stance and he played it off very well.

     - The Hermione being tortured part? Oh my god I had chills. She was freaking (here we go again) brilliant. Seriously. Especially when I compare that to say, Kristen Stewart in the first Twilight movie near the end when she's supposed to be in the most severe pain ever and it's laughable? Emma Watson killed that part. Seriously killed it. SO brilliantly (whoops, somebody get me a thesaurus) portrayed.

     - And um... Ron? Helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllo. When did that happen and how have I not noticed? Boy's freaking buff. And kind of seriously hot all of the sudden, even with the ginger. Wow.

I'm sure there's more I can think of... but that'll do for now. My verdict, SO GREAT. Not including the first one, it's definitely the best movie of the lot.

  • So Alix, how many times do you predict you'll go see the movie before Christmas?
  • Yes, also everything Alix said. I also would have liked to have seen Olivander and Luna's scene.
  • OH!!! And Voldemort getting the Elder Wand gave me chills. I just got chills again thinking about it.
  • Before Christmas? Hmm... I'm going to go with at the very least four times. We're going to try go again on Sunday afternoon. I seriously could've sat there and watched it all over again from the end point. I didn't feel like it was movie-length at all, the time flew by and suddenly it was 2:30 am and I was all whaaaa? When did THAT happen?

Jaw-jah I loved the ending. Seriously creepy and ominous. Fuucking Voldemort. I hope he dies.

I felt the same way!!!! I've never felt like a movie went so fast.

I think the look on his face when what he thinks happens with Harry doesn't happen will be even better than if he died.

And I'm sorry, but I think Scrimgeour should have had golden hair. And less spittle.
  • I can't agree with that, but I love Bill Nighy like, hard. I do think Bill's hair should've been in a pony tail though, with his fang earring. He needed that dammit.

And when DRad was wearing the bra and playing Fleur? Ahahahaha. Oh man.

  • Oh yay, you two are here!

I agree that the Three Brothers scene was really creative. Loved.

Georgia, thank you for reminding me of Harry/Runcorn. My friend actually asked me at that part why he was walking like that - we did not know.

Hermione/Emma acted her ass off. I remember someone - sorry, can't remember who - saying they were worried about her pulling off the subtle emotions, and she nailed it. I mean when she and Harry were dancing, I totally got that confusion of I like Ron/I miss Ron/Harry is here/Harry is someone I love as a friend/it's a dark time, let's just comfort each other/no, Ron.

  • I like Bill Nighy, and I definitely think his portrayal was good; I just couldn't get over his dark hair.

Emily, I agree about Hermione. And when she had to wipe her parents' memories, that was the first time I teared up. And then when she had to perform the spell again, tears welled up again.
  • Yes she sure did. Holy cow I was impressed with her performance. She freaking nailed it.

I didn't actually mind how "Harry" as walking when he was Runcorn, mostly because my thinking was "if I had no farking clue where I was going and were trying to wander around like a had a clue, I'd probably be dragging my steps in order to buy time to plot out a course of action". I didn't however, like how dimwitted he looked. Harry doesn't walk around looking totally gormless really, ever, and in my head Albert Runcorn was like, terrifyingly intimidating.
