S/O--Making friends as an adult.

Re: S/O--Making friends as an adult.

  • I've met lots of friends through trivia- we play at a bar, so plenty of social lubricant, which I need.

I met a bunch of fun people through yelp.com, too, surprisingly.

  • This sounds interesting:
American Association of University Women - Rochester Branch
National service group whose primary mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education & research.
Regular meetings (monthly from September through May) throughout the year with interesting speakers on a variety of subjects that address community, state and national concerns, as well as personal interest subjects.

I dont think ive ever thought of how it happens, it just does. Ive met friends through work, hanging out with friends and meeting their friends, stuff like that. I generally am friendly (believe it or not) and talk to people at the gym or in lines, but I dont ask them to hang out or anything. I actually dont like hanging out with people so I dont "need" a lot of friends because then I just feel like a jerk when I never want to hang out.
  • I don't really. I've had the same friends for years and I'm too lazy to make new ones.

  • My current strategy for making friends is hanging out on (P&)E.  Sometimes I think it's not really working, though.  :-)  Other than that, I have a few work "friends" and some couples that DH and I occasionally hang out with, but I don't really have any close friends.  I'm not very sociable though, so it's my own fault.
  • I was just looking at meetup.com Fishy!  There's a dance studio in the area that does free beginner's group lessons once a month--I might try to talk K into it!
  • I make friends through friends and jobs.  I met a couple great people when I worked part time in a dinner theatre.  I hang out with them occassionally still.  I'm kind of stuck in my ways though.  My newest "friends" are people H work with.

  • Also, I've met some nice people in my grad program (especially my team) who I wouldn't mind getting to know better.  I just need to get a little more motivated to cultivate friendships.
  • Meetup has a bunch of stuff! I found a bunco group in Roch, but there's a waiting list. BOOOOOOO.

  • I don't see a Bunco group in Roch, Fishy.  I see a UFO research group, and a Vampyre group, but no Bunco.
  • There's also meetin.org

  • I agree this can be difficult.  We moved to this town where the only people we know are ages 50-60+.  These are our friends and we have get togethers often but meeting people our own age is ideal.  I used to get down because I had no friends near but it turns out you meet people in the strangest ways.. We frequent a restaurant here that has younger servers and one of the girls is bilingual so H hired her to work at his store part time and she has become one of my best friends.  She's introduced me to her friends and we've all become a pretty close group.  It's funny looking back sometimes.

  • Oh, thanks Kiki!  I didn't see that one when I googled :)
  • Caveat on meetin, JK- I did find some trivia buddies on there, but the rest of the people I met were kinda whacko.  And 50.  And single.  :)

  • Through other friends/old friends. My closest friends I met through people I knew from college, some of whom I'm not close too and/or don't live around me anymore.

Is there a book club with younger people you might want to join? A class you can take, like art?

I'd love to take a class--I'd like to do some dance classes but I can't really ask FI to spend money on that right now while I'm unemployed.  It's definitely something I'd like to do once I get a job.  I've been looking (googling) for book clubs and stuff but I'm not finding a ton.  I'm not really sure how to find those kinds of things, aside from the already mentioned sites.
  • Oh, I did join a Harry Potter adult fan group once. NOT as weird and antisocial as you would think. Almost all women who like Apple computer products, ranged in age from 22-45, and would get together once or twice a month. But since the end of the book series, that's pretty much done for. I still keep in touch with a few, though.

  • Do you have a public library system? Call a few libraries and see about book clubs. But it's always possible they're full of seniors and SAHMs. So I guess try to find one that meets on Saturday!

  • Yeah, I go to the library a lot actually.  I could definitely ask there.  Thanks!
  • I'm not really into going to bars. Beyond couples that we hang out with, I don't socialize nearly as much as I used to. I work with kids all day, and I volunteer with a kids theatre group. So, most of my time is spent with kids under 7.

  • Okay Fischey, I have to ask. What is Bunco?

  • Knottie meetups. I have also made new friends by taking up new hobbies, like swing dancing or joining a book club. But it's truly hard making friends as adults. No fun!

That's what I've tried. I'm into scrapbooking, so I joined a local group that tries to meet once a month for crops.

I've also met people at local wrestling shows (not high school/college stuff; this is more like independent stuff. Like WWE, only actually wrestling and not talking all the time). FI and I met another couple who must sit front row like we do.

Work is tough because it's a store; kind of hard to form a friendship with someone and never hang out because one of you has to be in the store all the time. Most of my friends are "by products" of other friendships.

  • Work, neighborhood associations (our group does a TON of stuff including monthly happy hours), and neighbors.  My sister is in football and softball leagues and I have a girlfriend who goes to Shiba Inu (a dog breed for those not into dogs) meet ups and does hikes and stuff with people who have other dogs.

Volunteering is another source of new friends.
