NER - menu

Our wedding will be served family style. There will be table apps during cocktail hour, a plated salad and then 2 entree options served family style to each table plus three sides served family style.

I've been debating for a while either having one menu per table (sort of propped up on one of those twisty wire things? LINK or in a cute frame) OR just one large chalkboard style menu by the bar. I ran this by FI today, and he said, "Well, I think each person should have their own menu in case they want to take them home."

...What? Is that a thing? Do people like to take menus home?

Re: NER - menu

  • One per table. People really don't care to take menus home.
  • I always take them home if they're available, but then I'm weird.

I think one per table would be just fine, though!
  • Whenever I see individual menus, I think "what a waste."

  • I like individual or at every other seat. I like to see what's coming and at a 10 person round you're not going to be able to easily reach a framed menu to pull it close enough to read and you'd need the font pretty big for everyone to be able to read it where it sits.
  • My mother took the menu home from our wedding. But, she's my mother. I wouldn't expect a normal guest to do such a thing.
  • I'd say depending on your table size, one per table or one per couple or person. If you have a smaller table size like 4-6 people and everyone at the table knows each other, a single menu should be fine. But if you have a larger table, 8-10 people, I'd say maybe 1 menu per two people, or one on each side of the table, but not one for each person.

  • 1 per table or a two chalk boards one on each side if people walk through one door to go in to the reception. I think it depends on the style of your wedding, if it's more rustic I think the chalkboard would be great, but if it's more formal, the signs on each table would look more formal.
  • I would have no interest in taking home a menu from someone's wedding. I think one per table is fine.
  • One per table. I don't think anyone will want to take it home. They could alway photograph it if they like it.
  • One per table. I would not be interested in taking home a menu from the wedding. But I do think it'd be nice to see what was offered once I was sitting at my table instead of having it only located by the bar.

  • I agree with stage that you don't even need a menu. If everything is already going to be out on the table, what's the point?
  • I voted for one per table, cause (almost) no one will want to take one home so there's really no need to do individual, and if people don't go to the bar they wouldn't see a chalkboard one. But really, I agree with Stage and would probably skip menus alltogether.
  • Oh and... from the title I thought you were going to ask us if your planned menu was good and/or to make suggestions for additions/changes and I was disappointed that wasn't the case cause I kinda like seeing what people are serving.
  • I say one per table. I'm pretty sure the only people who will take one home and save it are you, your mom, and probably your new MIL. Maybe grandmothers too but that's about it.

If I took one home, I would either throw it in the trash right away or stick it on my desk in a stack of papers I need to take care of and then throw it away in a couple months when I go through that staick.

Table apps during cocktail hour are fairly standard: fruit plate, cheese plate, olives, almonds, meatballs, that sort of thing.

If we fall below our minimum number of guests, we'll do passed apps which will be: tomato bruschetta, mini grilled cheeses with gruyere and caramelized onions with a sherry ju (is that how that's spelled?), and bacon-wrapped chorizo and date skewers.

Plated salad will be arugula, shaved fennel and sliced apricot with a white balsamic and shallot viniagrette.

Family-style entrees will be NY strip steak with brandy green peppercorn sauce with crispy shallots + wild mushroom ravioli with porcini cream sauce and truffled popcorn (I was surprised how much the truffled popcorn added to the dish). Optional vegan option will be portabello mushrooms stuffed with a sort of caponata.

Family-style sides will be butter whipped potatoes, rice pilaf and green beans with garlic and lemon.

Top shelf open bar.
