calculating fabric yardage- did i add this correctly?

So I need to make 12 table runners. They should be 20 inches wide, and 10 feet long. The fabric comes in 60 inch width.   Im thinking I need 15 yards of fabric... right....?
20 inches is 3=.55 yds... 120 inches is 3.33 yds... times 12 tables... HELp..;-p

  • You want to make sure to add in seam allowance. That would be 1/2" (approx) on each edge, so 1" all the way around. If you want to fudge it a bit you could go with your original measurements (60" wide = 3 runners) and they would just end up being 19" wide at the end.

    As for the length, let's see. 10 feet x 4 (with 3 runners per length because of the 60" width) = 40 feet/3 = 13.33 yards.

I would get 14-15 yards just as a precaution but if you want to save a few bucks go for 13.5 yards and cut accurately.

Remember, measure twice, cut once! Good Luck!

  • You need 13 1/3 yards. Each width will yield 3 runners (60" divided by 20"). The Length of the runners is 3 1/3 yards. Multiply 3 1/3 by 4 to get 13 1/3.

Who says you don't need to use fractions in the "real" world.
  • Ditto Bubbalub.  That's correct.

  • 15 yards is pleanty as long as you don't mind them being about 19" wide instead of 20, as Bubbalub said, you need a seam allowance.
