Broadway shows

I know I could post this on the NYC board, but I like everyone here more and it's way slow over there.....

Anywho, has anyone seen anything recently? I know there are a few people on here that have traveled to NYC and seen theater. DH and myself are going to see Ragtime this weekend!

Re: Broadway shows

• I just saw the new West Side Story production with my sister, and I highly, highly recommend it.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
• No I haven't seen anything lately, but that doesn't mean I don't want to. I wish I could afford it.
• Sarah, I saw WSS for my birthday and I LOVED it! I especially loved the highway set where the rumble takes place. But our audience was super annoying because most of them got up to go to the bathroom, then noticed the set change, and then laughed and started chatting during the set change.

I read that ragtime is closing this weekend and I have been hearing amazing things!

BTW, are either of you ladies near NYC?

• I want to go to Broadway. I even want to go to the touring shows. I've only been to one, and it was basically for FI's niece--101 Dalmations.

on my list:
Phantom of the Opera!!!!!
Wicked
Lion King
Chicago
West Side Story
Rent
Mamma Mia
Les Miserables
Miracle Worker

*sigh*

• I haven't seen anything in ages and it's killing me. Between wedding planning when I was home last year and family stuff, I haven't been able to get in. :(

When is Ragtime closing, the 10th? Friends of mine had tickets after the New Year and were bummed that it was closing...but were ecstatic when they found out it was extended!

From what I've heard from my theater friends, Ragtime is utterly brilliant. I loved the original show and I can't imagine how they could make it better, but I guess they did!

I've also heard raves about Next to Normal, which won a bunch of Tonys last year.

• Pooh the only one on your list I haven't seen on Bway is Miracle Worker, but that's opening soon! With Abigail Breslin as ms. Keller.

I can tell you right now that Lion King is one of my fave shows. DH doesn't even like musicals (he tells me that he likes plays and drama musicals) and he said that Lion King is in his top 5 theater experiences ever!

• I suggest West Side Story, but I'm biased because I worked on it.

Ragtime is supposed to be da-bomb. There's a new Twyla Tharp dance show of all Frank Sinatra music opening in March. I'm biased with that one too though.

I saw Phantom twice, but want to see the new one, so add in the *cough* not real Broadway show of Avenue Q and you have the list that I want to see.

• Ragtime got extended to the 10th. I went to Broadwaybox.com and the tickets are ridiculously cheap. I guess no one is seeing it and that's why it's closing....we're going to see it for $70 a piece in the orchestra.....which is a steal!!!

• I'm near NYC on and off. My family lives about 45 minutes outside the city by train, so whenever I go to see them I take the chance to go into the city for the day at some point. It was a great way to grow up!

Stina, my audience wasn't so bad, except for the girl sitting next to me, who was the most annoying audience member ever - playing with her phone, sighing, twitching, flipping through the program, shaking her leg. I don't know how anyone could be bored with Leonard Bernstein.

Pooh, you should just go! I've seen a lot of those shows and others in community theater productions, and even with community theater you get a sense of how the play works.

Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller? oh that is going to be AWESOME!!! I love Abigail, she's my favorite child actor, definitely talented beyond her years. and Helen Keller is basically an idol of mine. I'm deaf myself, but not to the point of needing sign language (though nearly there). I actually call myself half Helen Keller (I'm completely deaf in one ear, and nearly blind in the eye on the same side). I have her autobiography and it's so good!

*pout*

I would go to the shows when they come to Houston, but I can't afford them right now. when I become a nurse and start making the big bucks, I'll grab my best friend and go. she's as obsessed with the shows as I am. FI won't take me. another *pout*.

• Sucrets, Billy IS amazing! I saw it with the newest Billy though. I went with my FIL and he was such a bad audience member. The kid was so talented....and all my FIL could say was "he's not really a kid, he's a midget." He was trying to be funny, but I was not amused and I nearly slapped him.

My DH liked the ballet scene, so I think we can attempt going to the ballet and he won't kill me!

• Pooh - they recently released the rights to Rent so that amateurs can do it. I know a community theater here in Little Rock put it up over the summer, so I would think that it could be playing somewhere near you...although I don't know your theater scene at all.

• actually, the theater scene in College Station is pretty good. the community theaters are good, and A&M is able to get Broadway shows on campus when they are in between Dallas and Houston. plus, I have Houston too, so it's pretty much awesome.

$$$$$ is the only thing standing in the way of me going to shows. that, and time. *sigh* all in due time.

Ah, okay. Comprehension fail on my part.

That's odd about the masks...they're quite beautiful!

I can somewhat get the puppet thing, but you totally get used to it. Like the revival of Sweeney Todd - as much as I am a pit musician and an actor, it took me a good 20 minutes to get used to the cast playing the instruments on stage themselves.

My friend was in Naked Men Singing. Go him! I certainly could never do that.

• How bad does everyone think of me that I secretly want to see Shrek just a little bit? I have xm radio in my car and I listen to the bway channel whenever I drive. Shrek music comes on at least once a day and it's cute!

Okay, Phantom was the first Bway show I saw, back in 1992ish, so it holds a special place in my heart. But I've seen it a few times since then and it was just awful. I can't imagine a sequel being good. At all.

Haven't we learned our lesson from Annie Warbucks and Snoopy?
