[QUOTE]I know, Expat. I'm probably forgetting 20 people too. Alix, you are just unbearably cool. You know how you say women tend to hate you? I have a friend who is like that too - gorgeous, blond, foreign. (Well, her mother is from Germany and she's traveled a lot.) Anyway, you remind me of her. I wish I was effortlessly cool, gorgeous and fashionable. The only thing I can possibly muster is "cute."

Well... thank you! But really, it's completely not effortless, I look a step away from a hobo without doing my hair and makeup. Honestly, I look terrible if I just try to look casual, I'd kill for "cute" but it's nowhere close unless I work at it. That whole 15 minutes and out the door deal does not agree with me at all.
    But I'll take all that "cool" stuff anyday <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

  • Rach - the stuff people came up with was amazing. I was LITERALLY twitching in my chair all day reading the comments. And I can't totally use the would literally there.

<div>OMG, do I fall into that description too?  Because I'm so NOT!  </div>
  • I'm too tired to read it tonight, TJ, but I bookmarked it to read if I'm off tomorrow.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Knottie Poll : "Rittle"? That's awesome. I noticed something about me grammar-wise that makes me want to pour hot coffee over my keyboard. I use "like" a lot - but only on forums. It's weird; I don't use it in everyday life, I don't use it in correspondence online or not, just on chat forums. I cannot fathom why.

<div>I can actually explain that one! Text can't convey your facial expression, body language, or general personality. By throwing in the word "like," even though you wouldn't necessarily use it out loud, you're kind of (consciously or unconsciously) lending a more laid back, relaxed, casual tone to your written words than would otherwise appear. This isn't as necessary when you're speaking out loud, because smiling, gestures, etc would convey that you're not as uptight or stilted as plain text would make you sound.</div><div>
</div><div>(i have to edit a lot of professional and more casual writings. Nerd lesson off.)</div>

  • Well hell. I'd never thought of it that way but it totally makes sense (there's another one - "totally", never use it in that context IRL). Thanks!

  • Rach, you would love it here. We have a commercial for Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy and a manic chef is like, "Get your start on a new career..." [camera zooms into his face at warp speed] "LITERALLY!" That's it. H and I are very much puzzled by what they are trying to imply about non-literal ways to start a new career.
