In Response to Re: Where did or will you go on your honeymoon? : Eh, it's not really like ANYWHERE. Kingston is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
Posted by msmerymac
Yeah, the issues in Kingston happened right before our HM, and it had me a little on edge, but since our resort was so far away from Kingston and we weren't flying into that airport, our TA said we didn't have anything to worry about. I wanted to go to Mexico, but H and our TA said it wasn't safe. I have heard mixed things on this though.

Jamaica is like anywhere else, it has its okay areas that are more touristy and other not so good areas. Yes, there were the little Rastafarians that came up on the boats and tried to sell us marijuana and other stuff, but the security officers did a good job keeping an eye on them. Of course, I never went walking around at night w/o H, but during the day I felt comfortable walking back to our room for something or whatever. As long as you stay on the resort, you are fine.

It is when you go out of the resort (on outside excursions that you book through the hotel, but are not part of the resort) that you have to be careful. We went to a specific destination and stayed with our tour guide and group, got back on the bus and went back to our resort/hotel and were just fine. We didn't once think about venturing off on our own.
• We're going on a cruise in the Southern Caribbean.  Ports include San Juan, Aruba, Curacao and Dominica.  It's H's first cruise and my third, we can't wait!
• Ooo! Actually I have NO idea what it would cost but I went to Israel and Egypt a few years back and it was incredible. There's so much history there. Tel Aviv is beautiful and the sand on the Mediterranean is like powder.  Eilat was also nice but very humid and I wan't a fan of the beaches (red sea). Cairo was full of great places but a little sketchy.
• We are going on a 7 night, 4 port, Caribbean cruise.  Including flight and a balcony room it was only $2600.
In Response to Re: Where did or will you go on your honeymoon? : FWIW, I used to travel to Jamaica frequently for work. Kingston is dangerous, but the majority of tourists don't ever set foot there.  I would go to some *bad* parts- like area where that drug gang stuff went down, Spanish Town, etc. I never had a problem. Mo Bay is the 2nd largest city and just as dangerous as Kingston, but bad things rarely happen to the tourists.  Jamaicans know where their bread is buttered.  (Not to say that noting bad happens to tourists, but they try really hard not to let anythign happen.) <strong>Oh, and those people are soooo not Rastafarians!</strong>  A true Rasta would never do that.  Pst and run, sorry!
Posted by aplatanada
Good to know, thanks. Are they just bums that go around on their little kayaks trying to get people to buy their homemade goods and drugs? I guess we did encounter some true Rastafarians when we were on one of the excursions and even bought something for MIL from them.
• we stayed local for 3 nights then took a trip to Bermuda a year and a half later when we had the money.  bermuda was gorgeous.  short flight from the east coast, and totally safe.  i would never go to Mexico.  we have a friend who is mexican, and still has family there and even she wont go there anymore.  that's pretty telling.  i woudl also never go anywhere where they say "dont leave the resort".
• Lake Louise and Vancouver Island.

I grew up in FL, so going to a beach in the summer seemed boring to me :D
We were initially planning on Mexico by my mom is all nervous about all the violence and stuff going on down there. Travel agent says dont worry NBD at all. My cousin who was  a TA and tavels a lot says she would be worried to go to mexico right now.

<div>UGH. I hate hearing this. My H has been going to Mexico every week for the past 3 years for work. He is there right now actually. Last time he was home he was only able to stay for about 20 hours. I HATE that he is there all the time. His company knows how dangerous it is too- they have a full time bodyguard. Granted he is NOWHERE near the resort areas. I am really not the best person to say anything about Mexico though, because they stole my H. : ( (For what it's worth, we went to Mexico a few years ago and really did love it. We were in Riviera Mya.)</div><div>
</div><div>To answer your question, we are going to HI. We got really lucky and are getting to go to Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. H gets to keep all his FF miles and hotel points, so we didn't have to pay for airfare (except between the islands) and hotels. </div><div>
</div><div>What kind of honeymoon are you looking for? A beach veg-out or something more active? And are you trying to keep it warm weather? (Sorry if you answered these already, I'm slow.)</div>

• I may have anwered it before but my brain is fried after working 14 hours today so I can''t really remember. We are looking for something that is All inclusive, not that FI and I are huge drinkers but we do like to have a good time and I expect that 5 days with no responsibilities will make us feel very free to drink. We do want something that is warm weather FI would love something that has a swim up bar. This is really his only request for the whole trip. I did check into Aruba and it does seem in our price range and it looks gorgeous. I would like to do a little sight seeing of the local markets or what not but I think alot of the time we will be relaxing. We will have been together for 8 years when we get married and neither of us have ever had a vacation. So relaxing, drinking, eating, swimming and tanning are our main wishes!!

<div>Ah this is awesome to hear - we are going to both countries in August - I can't wait to experience the culture!!! </div>

• We went to Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The resort was beautiful and the staff was super friendly. We left the resort once for an excursion to Dunn's River Falls. It's not the safest place in the world, but I didn't feel any unease traveling outside the resort since we were with a group and tour guide. However, I'm not sure I would have ventured outside on my own. But it was okay because we were just excited to be in Jamaica (first time out of the country), so lounging around the resort and beach was enough for us.

Oh, and at the time we booked the resort was running a 50% off sale, and we paid only $335 per night for both of us (this included all food, drink, room service, several excursions, and tons of water sports at the resort in a one bedroom beachfront suite).
Hahaha, your FI is silly. People have disappeared from just about everywhere in the world. T<strong>he comment that Jamaica is fine if you stay at your resort is the reason that right now I have no desire to go to Jamaica. To me the fun of traveling is seeing a new place, not seeing a resort that could be anywhere in the world.</strong>

This is the major thing keeping me from wanting to do an all-inclusive resort for our HM and not understanding why my friends are planning a $2k/persion trip to Pvnta Cana this upcoming July. The idea of laying on a beach with unlimited booze sounds amazing, but I don't want to spend that much money to do so. If I'm traveling somewhere, i'd at least want to do an excursion.

We're considering a cruise, but there aren't many going out the week after our wedding, so we have to think about if we want to wait a week or not if we go that route.
• We went to Belgium (Brussels and Bruges) and then Paris. It was also not your fun in the sun type vacation but we're big foodies and DH is a major beer connoisseur so it was perfect for us.
In Response to Re: Where did or will you go on your honeymoon? : Yeah. I was in Scotland (Edinburgh, which is really Southern Scotland) in August '09 and it was pretty rainy and mid-60s. I loved it and all, but they were like, "Yeah, this is typical summer weather" so I don't even want to fathom what winter would be like.
Posted by msmerymac
Just about the same... maybe 50s instead of 60s.  It's an island, so there's not much variation in temperature.<div>
</div><div>Our honeymoon = Ireland & I've never had bad rain when I was there.  I must say, out of 14 days I've spent in Ireland, I've had only ONE of rain and none that were cold.  I was there in the spring both times, March/April.</div>

• We just went to Mexico in September which is where we got engaged and I felt so safe the entire time I was there. And we did not stay on our resort at all. We were staying at a RIU in Playa Del Carmen and took public transportation (Buses they call them collectivo's) everywhere. We would walk 10 minutes into town every day and even adventured to the local Walmart which was not in the tourist district (But had super cheap souvenirs!)

I would completely recommend Mexico for a few reasons.
Its so cheap! Half the reason is because of all the news but all the issues are up north near the US border.
It's gorgeous as well! It was so pretty and the beaches were so nice.

If you have any questions or want to hear about our trip just let me know. I would completely and totally recommend it!

• We are renting a private vacation villa in St. John USVI.  It's very private and secluded on a hillside with 360 degree views so we'll get to see sunrises and sunsets and we'll have our own private outdoor hot tub and pool!  Cannot wait!

• We were supposed to go to Belize and stay at Ramon's Village on Ambergris Caye.

We actually went to Virgin Gorda in the british virgin Islands. I would recommend Little Dix bay or Bitter End resort ( if you go to bitter End, you can get a hobie cat and go see Richard Branson's island.

• We went to Seaside, OR, about 90 minutes from where we live.  We got married 11 days before Christmas and H could only be off for a few days (got married Sat, he had to be back at work on Thurs) so it made it easier and cheaper to stay close to home.  Plus, it was super relaxing to only have to drive a little way.
