Anyone have a Soda Stream?

Does anyone have one of these?  Do you really use it or is something that sits in your cupboard after the novelty wears off?  If you use it, what are your favorite soda flavors?

Do they really save any money or is this a far more expensive way for DS to get a rootbeer fix?

Re: Anyone have a Soda Stream?

  • I bought one for my H for Christmas, so I can't answer yet.

The people I know who have them mostly use them for making bubbly water rather than the soda, and they looked at the device's advantage as helping them get over their soda fix.  However, H doesn't drink sparkling water, and I did buy some of the syrups, so we'll see.

Sorry I'm not of more use.  I'm assuming you read the million reviews of the Soda Stream and the syrup flavors on amazon?
  • My sister has one and it saves her a ton of money, but she is someone who would previously drink a bottle of perrier every day. She sometimes uses the diet cola syrup too.

If you get one, I recommend buying some of the smaller bottles (0.5L) because they can be easily brought in a lunch.
  • I do not have a Soda Stream, but my FI is obsessed! They did a sampling at Macys one day and he was amazed, and the Soda was pretty good! We're not huge Soda drinkers so I think it would be a waste for us! But, I think it's pretty neat!

  • FI and I have one and use it all the time. We've had it about three months now and never buy soda from the store anymore. I do think it saves us some money because we drink quite a bit of soda. Plus the convenience of being able to have several flavors on hand at any given time is really nice too. Some of my favorite flavors are root beer, orange, cranberry raspberry, peach iced tea. FI just drink the diet cola and likes it a lot. They don't taste exactly like name brand but they're pretty close. I'd see if you can find somewhere that's doing a tasting so you can see what they taste like before spending the money.
  • We just got one about a week ago.  Too early to say about cost savings and usage. However, DH uses it everyday so far.  He is a huge soda drinker and would buy a few everyday.

The one we got came with a 12 sample pack of flavors.  He didn't like 'Dr Pete' (I guess it's like Dr Pepper), but he seems to like all the others.     I'm not much of a soda drinker and have only tired the lemon-lime and orange soda ones.  They were good.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I have one and I use it pretty often. I bought the base model when it went on sale at the store that I work at so I got a pretty good deal. I really like it because we live in an apartment on the 5th floor so I don't have to lug bottles of soda up to my apartment from the grocery store anymore. :) Definitely read the reviews of the different models and soda mixes on Amazon - most of the soda mixes I've tried are pretty good except one, Apple Mango or something, which I didn't like as much. The cherry cola was probably my favorite. It doesn't taste at all like cherry coke or whatever, it has a more tart flavor like an actual cherry.

Also you can make your own mixes/syrups by diluting sugar into water and adding flavor (lots of recipes out there if you google it), and some people use the Torani syrups intended for flavoring coffee and drinks.

  • Thanks ladies!
  • I just buy cheap bottled sparkling water and pour the syrup in. It tastes good to me!

  • We have one and love it! It was Hs fathers day present and it has been well worth it.

  • I tried several flavors when they had it on free sample at Costco... that stuff was Nasty! Tasted like cough syrup! I'm officially never getting one.  And 'sides, if it's easier and cheaper to drink soda, that's not really a good thing...
  • We have one as well and use it quite often. Just a FYI they use Splenda in all of their soda mixes, even the non-diet ones, so some people say it has a weird taste. I like the Naturals line they have and I use it for sparkling water a lot. H likes most of them except the Dr. Pete which tastes nothing like Dr. Pepper!

  • We have one.  Its more work than grabbing a soda from the fridge, but you can make your own flavors so there are more options.  I think its good, but if you love one particular soda it probably won't be exactly the same.

  • FI got me one about two months ago and I use it almost every day. We love it!!!
  • We've got one on our Christmas list and plan to use it to carbonate juices since I'm addicted to my bubbly cranberry and orange and those are not cheap pre-made at almost $2. per 12oz.  the SodaStream pretty much will be our dream come true.
  • We just got one. Heads up to anyone who buys between Dec 1st-31st can get a $10 rebate on their website.

We have been using it and from what I have gathered, light colored sodas/ sparkling juices hold the carbonation better than dark colored sodas. I have to use a lot more carbonation for the Dr. Pete (I prefer the Diet cola though, but we didn't buy the full bottle, just the sample pack) but the lemon lime soda was perfect. We have only had it a few weeks and are very pleased, but I guess we will see how much money we save after we have had it a while. We drink A LOT of soda, so I am pretty sure this is a good investment, especially since we have used it for a party and everyone loved to choose their flavors.
  • We have one and love itmy fi loves the energy drink it tastes just like redbull and def cheaper then buying those all the time at $3 or so a can
  • I think I may have to buy myself a little present this year..thanks everyone!
  • I bought H the energy drink syrup since he loves energy drinks (yuck).  And the diet coke syrup and ginger ale syrup.  Otherwise, I think we're going to use Italian syrups or other drink mixes with the sparkling water.
  • When I was a kid (I am 40), my parents had one that they got from Schwan's.  We used it all the time as kids, but then Schwan's stopped carrying it.  Makes me laugh that people are calling the soda stream a totally new idea.
  • I love my SodaStream...it's saved us so much money since DH drinks a lot of soda.

I would double check just to make sure you can, because I know the instructions for our model explicitly state only use to carbonate water. But maybe other ones are different.
  • For those of you who don't like the Dr. Pete, but crave Dr. Pepper.  You can get actual Dr. Pepper and Diet Dr. Pepper syrup delivered to your home from Sams Club.
