I did Chicago in the rain a couple of years ago and it was all kinds of awesome! The rain kept everything airy and cool and made for some fantastic pictures.

I know it's not what you were hoping for, LVB, but perhaps the late flight will turn out to be a blessing in disguise?  You said you wanted to check out the nightlife -- well, now you can sleep in on Friday morning and arrive refreshed and ready to make a night of it, rather than tired and longing to collapse in a hotel bed.  I also think staying at the airport hotel will turn out to be really convenient, since you won't need to drag your luggage around town with you.  The El will get you anywhere you need to go from there.

It really does sound like a great trip. I am positive you'll have fun. :)

  • LVB, here's some recommendations I posted on TN.  Some suggested are a little pricier, but if you want some cheap recs, let me know!

And if you're staying at O'Hare, you will be able to acess downtown with the CTA Blue Line and I believe the Metra.  The metra may be a little more, but it's definitely clean and reliable.

I work in the O'Hare area and if you don't feel like trekking all the way to the city for food, there are some restaurants in the area like RAM,  Giordano's pizza, etc.

  • Birdie, that's one of those things that you rationalize and try to act grown up about, but it still sucks. I'm sorry.
  • LVB, if I were living in Michigan, I'd come see you.

I'm sure this makes you feel ever so better.

  •  Ah, LVB--one more thing!

I would look into a show at Second City in Lincoln Park.  H just went to one a few weeks ago and said it was hilarious.  That's one thing I think even the locals enjoy that's considered touristy.  Plus, if it's a rainy night, you'll be inside! :)

<div>Ditto.  And like you said Birdie, it's more the feeling that it's not noticed that you aren't there.  For all you know though, they did notice and feel horrible.</div>

Oh, thank God. How late does it last at night. I don't care if we get stuck in morning traffic because we have all day. I'd just be concerned about evening traffic trying to get back to the airport on time.

  • It's ok :-/ I just sometimes feel like I'm back in high school or my sorority again.
  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It sucks and I'd definitely be feeling sorry for myself too. I've been there.

Our first anniversary (not marriage, but dating) we had a trip like that. We drove, but somehow took the wrong route 2 and went in the opposite direction of where we needed to be. We lost three hours. Then we get to our hotel and it was closed. As in no longer an existing business. A tiny sign in the door said our reservations were being honored at such-and-such hotel and it was terrible. The beds were practically twins and hard as a rock.

The next day we got in a fight because of how crappy it all was. We spent the day at the amusement park and the day after headed to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. That hotel was even worse. There was a chunk of hair in the tub drain, someone down the hall was having extremely loud sex, and it just seemed not clean. So we asked to change rooms. The new room had a giant cockroach on the sink. The next new room had a weird brown nugget on the floor right when you walk in. We went back to our first room and used baby wipes to take a "bath."

On top of that, I left ALL my underwear at home and had to buy some at the outlets before getting on the road.
