post your favorite wedding dance songs!

What are your favorite songs at a wedding that make you want to jump out of your seat onto the dancefloor?

(this is a quasi-selfish post-- I'm making ipod playlists for when our band goes on break)

The more obscure the better!

My faves:  anything Michael Jackson, old school Whitney Houston, 90's hip hop

Re: post your favorite wedding dance songs!

  • Our DJ played the Electric Slide 3 times and the dance floor was packed every single time.  Drunk people really enjoy it, apparently.

  • I feel like people think they have to get up and do the electric slide when the band starts playing it!  Its like a conditioned response or something.

Brie, what random songs do you love to hear?

  • Haha Brie I love the Electric Slide! I'll get up every time for that song.

OP depending on your crowd, Twist & Shout may go over very well. :)
  • I like the Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle. Everyone danced to those at our wedding.

And everyone loved Shout, by the Isley Brothers. We have great pictures of everyone crouched way down and then jumping up in the air.

  • Oooo if you're shooting for 90's tunes, what about House of Pain.. Jump Around??
  • All great ideas, but our band already knows these and will play them for sure (I love them, too!)  So now I'm trying to think of 45 minutes worth of songs that are more obscure, that the band doesn't already know and will most likely play during the evening!  I don't want to repeat any songs.  Which is why I asked for more random/obscure songs.  Anything come to mind for you guys?

  • Superfreak.  I've always liked to dance to that song, but it makes me think of Little Miss Sunshine now and that makes me crack up.

    James Brown is always good.

I also really enjoy 50's rock for dancing :)

  • Hmmmmm nothing's coming to mind at the moment but maybe Google the Billboard charts from the early 90's (if that's the time period you're shooting for)... see what pops up that makes you go, "OH YEAH!!!" :)

I'm bored at work today, I'll go do that too. I'll let you know if anything interesting comes up. :)
  • well you're asking for obscure so:

    tunak tunak tun

youtube it... it's very very catchy and i always want to dance when i hear it...  happens to be one of FI and I's favourite songs, lol

not sure how your 90 year old grandma would react though, but hey if you have an open-minded guest list it could be a hit

When we were putting together our Ipod songs it was basically all the lovely dovey stuff. But I made sure to add KC and the Sunshines "I wanna put on my Boogie shoes". DH asked me why, but when it came on we were up dancing. He gets it now.

ETA: Any KC songs will do.

ahh I think i responded like hours and hours after you asked!

We're doing Waste and Wading in the Velvet Sea, and then FI insists on walking down to Fat Old Sun by Pink Floyd

I remember at a wedding last year during dinner (band break) they played Wonderwall and everyong broke out into song! it was awesome

  • I'm a big fan of "Shout" by the Isley Brothers and anything from the 90s.

  • I love dancing to older tunes...anything from Frank/Dean/the Rat Pack will get me out of my seat.
**i'm a little drunk on you and high on summertime** Photobucket
  • LOL @ numa numa... I love that song too!
  • Journey's Don't Stop Believin
Sir Mix a Lot - Jump On It - every single person at the reception was doing "The Carlton"
    imageimageimage
  • At the last wedding I went to (FI's cousin's) everyone was really into "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, and "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi.  I think those were the two songs where the dance floor was completely packed.

  • I love Don't Stop Believing, but it's FI's least favorite song ever.  I think it has to do with the fact that they say "south detroit" and play it a lot at Redwings games.  He's a diehard Pittsburgh Penguins fan!

These are all great ideas! Keep 'em coming!

ah, i didn't see, very nice! we had bliss and hydrogen played during our prelude, and cars trucks buses and divided sky played during cocktail hour/dinner. also the band that played at our reception played you enjoy myself with a peanuts theme tease and a vocal jam, and possum. we wanted destiny unbound to be our last dance song but they didn't have time to learn it.
  • dafodill, that's amazing! What kind of band did you have?  We really wanted a band that could jam like that, but couldn't find one in our area!  We are going with a great wedding band, but they definitely cater to the more traditional wedding music songs.

Maybe we'll just do a 15 minute YEM during dinner?!  Ooh and Possum/Get Back on the Train-- they did that at Cincy last November and it rocked.

I really wanted our first dance to be If I could I Would but we didn't ask the band early enough, so instead we're doing Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney.  Which is fine, since that was one of our first dates, going to see him in concert.
  • "hey-ya" by Outkast is a more unexpected one I've heard at a wedding that made me and everyone else get on the dance floor.

Our band knows how to play that one!  And that new black eyed peas song "I've gotta feeling."  They say "mazel tov" in it, so i think the band likes to play it at jewish weddings :)
  • Awesome! (but I guess not very helpful of me haha). I heard "I've Gotta Feeling" the other day & totally decided it needed to be played at my reception.

they're a really awesome local ct band that we're friends with. (h proposed on stage during their set at a music festival). we asked them to play our wedding, and they said yes! we had them play acoustic so the older people's heads wouldn't fly off during the jams. which reminds me, they opened up with "boogie on reggae woman" and jammed it out for a bit. towards the end of the jam my dad sidled up to me and said, "uh, jill, this is kind of weird..." and i was all "dad, it's stevie wonder".

hahahah that's hilarious!   That's so awesome you had a band like that.  My parents were against getting a local cover band simply because they might not have played weddings before and been a good enough MC.  I definitely understood where's she's coming from, so we are going with a local wedding band that does tons of weddings.  We hired all 9 pieces, so they can play a variety of music and we've asked them not to play the traditional wedding songs that we hear at all the weddigns we go to; instead play other songs by the same artists.  We hope they follow our guidelines!
  • "September" (Earth, Wind, and Fire), "In the Mood" (Glenn Miller Orchestra), and "My First, My Last, My Everything" (Barry White) usually get people up at the weddings I've been to.
