Potentially TMI hair question

How often do you ladies wash your hair?  Maybe TMI, but I was always a once a day (sometimes twice a day) washer... but after I got lowlights (I've only had my hair colored maybe 3-4 times in my life) my stylist suggested I wash it less so the color lasts longer....
Then my dermatologist kind of gave me the side eye when I said I washed it twice a day when I workout. she suggested I wash less too.

Am I weird?  What do you do if you workout?  I finally got some dry shampoo and tried it this morning but my hair feels gross.  It doesn't look bad, so maybe i"ve just got a complex about it.

I wash it every other day to every 2 days.  Washing it too much strips out the natural oils and will make it produce more.  It will feel oily at first, but as your hair adjusts to being washed less it will produce less oil.

  • I tried going down to washing every other day but my hair felt gross and oily.  But then I discovered if I condition on the days I don't wash, it helps a lot.  I thought it would weigh my hair down (it's very fine) but it didn't.  And it's improved the appearance of my hair quite a bit.  I also didn't like dry shampoo and didn't think it worked.

  • I don't think this is a TMI thread at all.

I usually wash my hair everyday. But it really depends on whether or not I went to the gym that day or if I have product in it. If I have just been at home doing stuff around the house, I might not wash it everyday esp if I plan on going to the gym the next morning.
  • I wash it once a day unless I'm not doing anything important.  If I don't wash it, it HAS to go under a hat or in a ponytail.  I really want to try that new Suave dry shampoo, though.

I use Aveda Shampure a couple of times a week instead of the Pantene as kind of a clarifying thing.

  • I've heard that washing your hair every other day is pretty normal and recommended. Shampoos and condtioners (pending on the brand/maker) can strip your hair of the healthy oils if washed too often.

However, I always shower after workouts.

  • I usually wash my hair every day too, but occasionally I'll skip a day. I just feel icky when I don't wash it every day, even though it looks fine.  I've bought some of the dry shampoo too, but I haven't tried it yet.
  • I wash my hair every day, and there's ZERO chance I wouldn't wash after working out.  Z.E.R.O.  BUT, I have VERY fine hair, very OILY hair, and it's been known to go greasy after 4 or 5 hours.  My hair is healthy and super shiny so hey.  Whatever.
  • I wash twice a day if I work out. I can't stand feeling gross.

People say it's too much. I'm ok with it. I think it looks fine. I'd rather wash it too much than feel gross. I have thin hair though, and a lot of it. And when I work out I sweat a lot.  CANT. NOT. SHOWER.

  • So J&K, you use conditioner on the days you don't wash your hair?  I want to believe you, I don't think you're liar, but it sounds so contradictory, haha.

  • I wash my hair everyday and can't imagine not washing it everyday. Not judging people who don't, but mine gets oily. I could go a day without washing, but it would have to be in a ponytail. But, I workout so it gets washed everyday.
  • I definitely can't not wash it when I workout... but often I work out after work... so do I stick my hair in a ponytail for work so it doesn't look like @ass?
I think if i didn't have bangs I could probably shower at night.  I curse my huge forehead for that....
  • Oh yeah I always wash it after I work out.  I work out Mon, Wed, and sometimes Friday evenings and wash it that night when I get home.

THIS might be TMI, but I only use shampoo twice a week (but I don't really work out or anything that will get me really sweaty). With my hair texture and the amount I have (every hair dresser I've ever had has commented on how thick my hair is), if I wash it too much it gets weighed down and actually looks worse. My most recent hairdresser said to wash it twice a week and condition it every day. It does take a couple of months of slightly oily hair to get used to it, but my hair changed during that time and now it looks great between washing!

  • I wash my hair every day. When I skip a day, it looks disgusting, as near the front (like bangs) and roots get super oily. And if I workout I wash it. I'm surprised how many woman can get away with every other day, so I suppose that's worth a try.

Your head is very used to you washing so frequently, so it will produce a lot of oil.  I promise you, that if you keep it up with washing less that it will start to produce less oil and you'll be able to go longer.

My hair is very dry and chemically treated, so I only wash it twice a week.  I used to wash it every second day.  If I even TRIED to go 2 and a half days it was nasty.  Now I can go 3-4 days EASY.

Dry shampoo helps, baby powder.  Just put it into your hands and work it into your hair starting at the root.  It'll become managable.

If I full out sweat in my head (not just my forehead) then I wash it.  No matter when the last time I washed it was.  But, that only happens to me when I run in the summer.  In the winter months I don't have to worry about it cause I barely sweat.

  • Oh gosh I'm the worst one here.  I wash my hair twice a week and I workout pretty much every day.  After a workout I use dry shampoo, set the top part of my hair in velcro rollers and blast for a few minutes with a blow dryer.  I wear my hair up every day to work though.

The Suave dry shampoo spray sucks.  It smells good but that's all.

  • I wash my hair once a day, twice if I workout.  I have A LOT of hair, and I feel super gross if I don't wash it.  I have always been told I have really healthy hair.  My scalp is super dry though, and I'm certain all the shampooing isn't helping.
  • Mandy your hair is an anomaly.

that's weird to me, because conditioner should make your hair feel greasier without using shampoo.  well in my experience anyway :)

fishy you don't have to worry about washing it everyday.  your hair is NO WHERE near dry.  so it won't dry out.  my hair is incredibly dry.  so the longer i go, the better.

  • I only do mine once a week. Every Sunday - I blow it out, set it, and I just touch it up every day (flatiron/blowdry) before work.

BUT my hair is very dry and very coarse and I don't have the time (or interest lol) to wash and blow it out and flatiron it every day.
  • Oh and I still do shower every day.

  • So Mandy, about how long do you think I'd have to be wearing my hair in a greasy ponytail every other day until it started getting used to being washed less?

And if you ladies don't wash it, do you still get it wet and restyle?  What do you do on the mornings you don't wash it?

  • Once a day. My hair is straight and about shoulder length and the look rarely holds up through a night's sleep. On a very rare occasion, I'll wake up, see it looks good, and skip washing it, but that's not often. And equally rare, I'll do it in the morning and then take another shower later in the day before going out for the evening so I'll wash it again. I did that regularly in college, but hardly ever do it now.

Besides the actual issue of how my hair looks, I often wake up congested and a hot shower with the water pounding on my head helps a lot. I guess I could wet it and not wash it, but I don't think my hair would look good if I tried to style it afterwards without washing.
  • I'm like you, I wash my hair at least once a day. I've been trying to decrease my washing, but it's just so greasy feeling! I've got Rockstar dry shampoo...can't remember what it's called, but it's a black can w/ a lime green top - it's wonderful! I can last an extra day if I use it and I'm not doing much where I'll be sweating. I recommend it =)

  • I never re-wet my hair to style it I use dry shampoo, Velcro rollers and heat from the blow dryer and I'm done.  Sometimes I might run my straightener through it.
If it's a weekend and I actually want to look nice, I'll just curl my hair as usual and wear it down.

I absolutely hate trying to style clean hair.  Hate it.

I want to know this as well.
  • I wash my hair everyday. My hair gets oily fast and because it is short it looks funny after I sleep on it. If I didn't shower every morning I would look like a crazy person. I usually shower more in the summer because I'm outside a lot (I walk pretty much everywhere I go) and I get sweaty. I have a hard time showering and not washing my hair, my hair just feels weird if I don't wash it.
