holy crap, me too. and I'm still fascinated by it. I didn't see the movie in theaters, but I rented it (I was 12 also, I think). I still love that movie.
In Response to Re: Remember When... : According to Wikipedia (btw - remember when there was no Wikipedia?) it ran from 1953 to 1994 so that encompasses a LOT of us.  But yes, I would have been watching in the mid-late 80's.
Posted by FutureMrsTR
But in 1981 it was completely changed (also courtesy of Wikipedia)

In <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_in_television" title="1981 in television">1981</a>, the format of <em>Romper Room</em> was overhauled and re-titled <em>Romper Room and Friends</em>.

Hence, I stand by my original statement that you must have been watching the newer version.

I saw the first hour of it a few months ago on HBO.  I haven't seen it in about 10 years, but I think it affects me even more now.  I will read just about anything associated with the Holocaust.  Have you been the museum?

• Is it weird that I don't remember a lot of this stuff?  I mean, I was born in 80, so I should but a lot of it I merely have vague memories of.  Perhaps it's because we didn't have cable or many TV channels and I was a dork who read all the time?  Or... huh.  No, really.  What DID I do with my childhood??  Because I don't remember at all.
• Barney!! My sister was obsessed with Barney when she was 4-6 or so, so I dealt with it from 11-13.

Power Rangers
• Remember Light Brite?  I begged for one for so long and by the time I got it, I don't think it was cool anymore.  Oh and Spin Art!

My dad went to Germany a few years ago.  I saw the pictures.  It was haunting.   That's definitely on my list of places to see before I die.

When Goofy had his own show.
• Remember Prodigy?

I also had a computer game that involved a rabbit and carrots and I can NOT remember what it was called, but I was obsessed with it.  I also loved Excite Bike for NES.

• Squirt drinks

And that drink bottle that was like an accordian and opened and clsoed.  What was that called?
• Power Rangers were awesome.  And then they started bringing in stupid other rangers.  I stopped watching when the Pink Ranger showed up.

I remember fighting with my brother over who got to play Duck Hunt.  And cheating by putting the gun right up against the screen.  And having to blow into the game when it wouldn't work.  GOD Nintendos were so cool.
