Favorite homecooked meal

H and I are cooking together for the FIRST time in the new kitchen and neither of us can come up with anything that is like OMG YES LET'S HAVE THAT!  We've thought about stuffed chicken breasts and steak.  But, we're kind of meh on it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Favorite homecooked meal

  • My favorite homecooked meal is probably picadillo. But that's just because it's easy :)

Our first valentine's day in our old house my H was working late and I decided to get some lobster tails and steam them, sautee scallops and shrimp and put them in an olive oil linguini. That was probably my best meal I made at home.

My mom's crab supreme over white rice. :)
There are lots of crab supreme recipes on the web, but I'm not sure how exactly she makes hers. It's pretty much my favorite food ever.

  • I'm a fan of chicken or beef stroganoff.

  • Probably a big plate of spaghetti with meat sauce and chunky things like onions and mushrooms, and really good garlic bread.

  • My favorite recipe ever is Chicken pesto pasta. i could eat it everyday if it wouldn't make me the size of a house.

  • My mum's moussaka. Mmm...

Or just some kind of pasta and a salad, it's easy for two people to cook together :)

  • I second Dani's vote of spaghetti.  Either that or you could do something comfort food/homey like tater tot casserole.

  • Our "fancy" meals always seem to involve seafood in some way.  This time of year it's typically grilled.
  • Spaghetti with my mom's meat sauce or enchiladas.  I also like breaded pork chops with mashed potatoes.

  • Oh fun!  Stir fries are good for working together in the kitchen - all that chopping and prepwork.  Roasted chicken or a potroast with carrots and potatoes are very homey and make the place smell great, too.

We have a bbq brisket in the slow cooker today, so that's not really cooking.
  • I don't even know where to start....
    My MIL's lasagna
    Baked spaghetti
steak on the bbq with baked potatoes, garlic bread and caesar salad
roast beef (cooked way too long in lots of water so it falls apart) with mashed potatoes, corn, and coleslaw.

  • Okay, the idea of shellfish is really good to me.  And crab supreme?  Yum... off to google.

Pasta is good too.  Not spaghetti though.  Spag is a saturday or sunday thing..  I let it simmer on the stove for minimum 4 hours.

I make a mean roasted chicken/turkey. I brine it in kosher salt with apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, and a ton of herbs for at least 24 hours before cooking it. It's so juicy and moist, I love it.

  • Herb "stuffed" pork loin.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Macaroni & cheese, made by my grandmother.  That's the best.

Any number of things my mom makes with fresh veggies - fried banana peppers or cornbread salad are top of the list, though.

For what I cook, hashbrown casserole and honey mustard chicken.

In my H's opinion, my Grilled Chicken Caesar Sandwiches (pizza crust instead of bread).

Sounds like something I need to try.  What herbs do you use?
  • H has been talking about making and freezing fresh pasta on his day off tomorrow.  So perhaps we can make a nice garlic shrimp pasta w/salad.  Drool.

  • My absolute favorite is my mom's beef pie supreme. It's a mix of mashed potatoes, beef, gracy, carrots, and cheese. I know it sounds like shepard's pie, but it's not. It's completely amazing and she rarely makes it because it takes so long. But, I have a doc appointment the end of July and she usually makes it for that because it stresses me out so much.

For what I make, I love pasta al forno. It tastes like olive garden and H loves it.
  • Enchiladas!

I'm also a big fan of garlic, olive oil, basil and oven-dried tomatoes tossed with pasta. Yum.

I usually toss in some oregano, rosemary, poultry seasoning, bay leaves, and... basil? It really depends on what I have on hand. Before I cook it, I rub an olive oil and herb mix all over the bird too. If you tent it for the first half of cooking, it'll prevent the top from becoming too brown.

I just added a chicken to my grocery list.  Thanks :)
  • Oh I know! I know!

    BUFFALO CHICKEN MAC 'N CHEESE.

    Yep. 'Nuff said. Mmmm...

  • Roast chicken!  Stuff the cavity with a halved lemon, some fresh thyme, a halved garlic head, salt and pepper.  Rub the outside with olive oil, salt and pepper.  Put on your roasting pan that is lined with sliced bread.  Cook at 450F for 20 minutes, then drop down to 375 for 45-60 minutes or until the juices run clear.  You get chicken flavored croutons for a salad and an awesome chicken.

  • I was thinking that alix!

I am on the pasta or mexican train.  I found a recipe for taquitos.  I haven't made enchiladas in a really long time.  Or I can be bad and have buff mac n cheese.
