How to wear my rings

Hello all I am recently engaged and my fiance got me a lovely heart-shaped ring. Since it didn't come with a band I went to a local jewelry store to see what they had. Everything I've read says my wedding band should be closest to me on my finger & that I should wear my engagement ring with the point of the heart facing away from me. The girl at the jewelry store said my band should wrap around the point of the heart. That goes against what I've read. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any thoughts on this. Does it really matter which way the ring faces?

Re: How to wear my rings

  • Most people wear their band on the inside, but I don't think it would be the end of the world if you wanted to wear it on the outside. You could also turn the ring around so the heart points out if you wanted to go with "tradition" of the band being on the inside.
  • I suggest on your fingers.

The only time I've hear anything about which way the heart should face was a Claddagh ring.

Me too--and once you are "with" someone or whatnot, you face it towards you. So, this would fix your problems.

  • Hey guess what? I wear my band on the outside. For shame. I just like it better that way. I think you can wear your ring however you would like.

I did. That's why I ask. Actually, I ask for your hand as well as Fische's. Sister wives!
  • I'll only marry you if you wear your wedding band on the outside. Like a boss.

  • I want two engagement rings to wrap my wedding band. And a pony. Those are my demands.
  • Are you saying I'm such a burden that you need a dowry?

    I'm insulted.

  • No, I just really want diamonds. And a pony. Lesser shiit has been demanded on TK today, I'm sure.
  • Biitch, please.

Yeah, Claddagh ring is point out when engaged and point in when married (both ways are left hand, right hand is single and in-relationship). If it's just a heart it doesn't have that custom but you can do the same thing if you want. Or just wear whichever way looks better, which personally I think would be with the point outward, but that's without seeing the specific ring so it's just speculation.

  • During your wedding ceremony, you wear your Ering on your right hand, and your FI puts your wedding band on your left hand.

Traditionally, you wouldn't remove the wedding band. Ever.

The E-ring you switch from right hand to left hand after the ceremony, or sometimes this switch is written into the marriage ceremony.

Then you can remove the Ering to do laundry or gardening or whatever, and leave the band on.

And the point of the heart should point at your elbow, so that when you look down at your hand, the heart is right-side up, not upside down. You are engaged to be married and then you will be married, so you wear your heart turned toward YOU, not open to other people to date you. The pp is correct that this tradition comes from the claddah ring, which also features a heart.

You can get a wedding band that accomodates the point of the heart with no problem.
