This. I feel as though they're conflating two issues that progressive thinkers have been working for years to separate!

Completely agree.  Angelina Jolie's take on this is so much better, in my mind.  She is letting her daughter decide for herself since she's now at an age where she can think for herself.  I always personally loved playing with Legos and Hotwheels while preferring to dress slightly girly (we'll say casual girly since I've never been Jersey Shore-esque over the top).  But yeah, let the child choose how to EXPRESS his or her sexuality.

  • One thing about this really makes me wonder (and I haven't read the second page yet so I'm sorry if anyone makes this point before I do). What if storm is a guy and grows up and decides he loves blue and wants to work on cars and get in fights and screw lots of women. I am inclined to think that the parents will be upset with him for picking a stereotypical gender role.

I say this because I hear from "modern liberal women" (and I put it in quotes because I have no issues with modern and/or liberal women... I think these particular women make a mockery of their own ideology) all the time about how I never had a choice in life and I'm an ignorant fool because I choose to cook and clean and take care of FI and I want to have lots of children. That's my choice, it just so happens to be the normal gender roll. Let's all ignore my college education and job to assume I must be some domestic slave. Will the parents do this to their child?

  • I don't really see the point of it. You can tell the difference between boys and girls so people will know at some point anyway.

    I just think its dumb.

  • @ NotColloquial - That's exactly what I was thinking!  I feel like if the girl loves pink and is "girly" or the boy wants to do "typical boy things" they wouldn't let them and would punish the child!

Also, how on earth are they getting the 2 older children to keep quiet?  Are they teaching them that telling people whether your male/female is something to be ashamed of?  Or what?  I don't get that.
  • Does anyone else want to talk about the name "Storm"??? Can you imagine being a grown man/woman with that name?

  • I'm wondering if this is more a cause and effect?

Based on the article Jazz is identifiying with more traditional girl stuff.  I wonder if Mom & Dad's decision for Storm is influenced by issues they've had from that?

I mean - if they really felt this way about gender stereotypes - why did they tell us that the other two kids are boys?    Why not keep that secret too?

I know a girl named Starr. I might see her tonight, actually. It seems like they gave all their kids unisex names. Not even because they like them, but because being adrogynous is SO IMPORTANT.

Pfft, this is why I shortened to Mel.  Gender specific names are so 2010.

Ditto Mery, I think they think having androgynous names is the most important thing ever. They also seem to have a huge need for their kids to be unique.

Also, my former congressman, Alan Grayson, has a kid named Storm and a kid named Star! And three other kids named after S nouns, Sage, Skye, and Stone.
  • I guess its not as bad as Track or Trig.

Sage and Stone ?? Seriously, that is just mean. "Hi, I'm Stone." "Uhh, you are what??!"
  • Shan, you don't plan on naming your kids after American Gladiators?  I guess you don't plan on loving them either :(

Well Shannon, I think the Children Grayson have enough problems already considering their dad is a crazy asshole who likes to randomly shout that Republicans want old people to die and makes commercials calling his political opponent "Taliban Dan." Their names are probably the least of their worries.
  • HA! Last thing I plan on doing with my kids is loving them, when I have them they will be my slaves. Love just makes it complicated. They will be called 1 and 2.

Anna, I am anxiously anticipating Florida politics, they seem so wacky.  Why can't people be more like Nelson?  Even my conservative husband can't complain about him.

Oh man you don't even know about Nelson. He and his family are weird. Like just odd people. I guess he is pretty "normal" politically though. I do a lot of Florida stuff so I see them around a lot. His daughter's wedding website is particularly interesting.

Anyway, I wish Charlie Christ hadn't ruined his chances of a future in politics. I've always liked him.

I had no idea about his personal life.  Weird.

Charlie Christ is from St. Pete.  H's brother knew him.  H's family are not fans.

Not really. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /> But I don't know if it has anything to do with being named Starr.

I also knew a girl named Rio once, after the Duran Duran song.

  • I see it doing more harm then good. they say the kids are homeschooled or something. I think they called it unschooled? Also they don't really educate the kids and just let them explore.

What happens when there 15 and they wana drink and do drugs? is this a prt of Unschooling? How on earth will they get a job without even a GED?

This is so messed up. I see their point, but come on. These kids will be so made fun of it's not funny. I know that is the parents' point and they want to challenge societal norms, but that is a heavy agenda to put on your child's shoulders. It is not going to work. The bathroom issue would be my biggest concern too. If I was Storm's teacher and I didn't know Storm's gender, wtf do I do?

Encourage girls to play with legos and let boys play dress up. That's one thing. Help them express their creativity through drawing, crafts, singing, dancing, etc. Teach them to stand up for themselves, sure, but all this is too far.
