Friggity Frack

FI has second thoughts about our first dance song.  What are you dancing to/danced to?

Re: Friggity Frack

  • I'm no help.  We danced to "Let it Snow" instrumental
  • Tell him it's too late to have second thoughts.
  • Ours was "Grow old with you" (Adam Sandler). It was perfect
  • what is your original choice?
  • Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Callet.
"In the old days my ass would be in your back yard picking cotton, so excuse me if I don't put much stock in how f*cking awesome the old days were." -Nuggs

We have a list of three contenders -- Wildflowers by Tom Petty, Someone Like You by Van Morrison, and Catch the Wind by Donovan.

Night, what song were you planning on dancing to?
  • Regina Spektor's version of Real Love. As pictured in sig! :P

    Have a listen; it's beautiful.

  • When the Rain Comes by Third Day.

    The lyrics are here <----link

    It's a pretty short song---like, 3 minutes? It's pretty.
  • Night - What's his concern? Is it just jitters and something you can talk him through?

Teresa and Sun, I LOVE your songs and considered most of them actually. :) We danced to "I'd Rather Be With You" by Joshua Radin.

  • Last minute we picked 'Have I told you lately that I love you', Rod Stewart version. I always liked Unchained Melody though.

  • Are we campaigning for songs here? :)

    If so...

Please excuse the fact that the video is from 1964, and also that the girls in the audience are screaming for Donovan.

And thanks Beatles!  I love Josh Radin's voice, so you picked a good one too.
  • Thanks Beatles. The version we played (which I just linked to) was one Regina played here in Australia for a radio station I listen to. It's such a gorgeous song; I can't listen to it without getting teary!
  • Thanks Teresa. Though I gotta say, the reason I didn't pick Catch the Wind is because the lyrics are really sad! I didn't notice until I paid attention and realized that he was singing about a wonderful love he'll never have. :( Still a wonderful song to waltz to though.

  • Sun, I think you posted about Regina Spektor's version in another recent post, so I looked it up and loved it immediately. I'm amazed by how her voice can modulate from so powerful to so sweet and tender. Before that I had only heard John Lennon's and "The Beatles'" version from Anthology 2. So thank you for that. :)

  • Haha, Catch the Wind is such an inappropriate wedding song, but I love it... and I'm hoping that people will have had a few drinks by the time we get around to dancing and won't pay close attention to the lyrics (if it's the song we end up choosing, that is).
  • Fair enough. :) I wouldn't have known its true meaning if I hadn't analyzed it as a potential dance song for myself, so I think people would love it if you used it.

Night, I'm also wondering if you need more ideas... How can we help?

  • I think I got the song idea from someone on this board, but we danced to "Lovely tonight" Joshua Radin w/ Ingrid Michaelson. Short and sweet.

  • Okay, We were going to dance to So Close from Enchanted. I had it half choreographed or maybe a little more when he decided it's too long at 3:40 or something. So now I'm looking for shorter stuff.  I didn't even want a first dance but he was super insistent.  Now I feel like we'll look dumb swaying back and forth.  I don't want to sway back and forth.  Gah!

  • We were supposed to dance to "Little Moments" by Brad Paisley, but our DJ forgot to bring it. So, we danced to "She's Everything" by Brad instead.

  • LOVE Ingrid Michaelson.  Her cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love" is simple and beautiful.

And Sun, the live version of "Real Love" is so lovely -- I don't think the version recorded on Instant Karma/Save Darfur does Regina Spektor justice.

You ladies have excellent taste in music.
  • We danced to "Grow Old With Me" by Jason Robert Brown.  If you think you know it, you don't.  It's more of a big band style and the lyrics are super cute and very us.  And JRB is my favorite composer.

  • Night - In lieu of full-on choreography, are there some little moves you can throw in to break it up a bit but keep it low-stress? H and I took a few dance lessons prior to the wedding to get him comfortable on the floor, and we learned that a couple little spins go a long way, and are major crowd-pleasers. People expect swaying back and forth for first dances, maybe some kisses, so anything else you threw in there would just be gravy. Maybe you could just work on a neat way to finish the dance together (dip, spin, kiss, etc.)?

Btw, our song was like 2 min long at most, and seemed to fly by.

Dance by yourselves for 2 minutes and then have your DJ open the floor up to everyone.

  • How about something classic like "Brudevalsen" it's the bridal waltz

  • It wasn't choreography choreography but more...not being boring and doing a little stuff.  I'm so fucking frustrated with him right now.  Couldn't you have figured this out in December when we started this business?

  • I'm sorry night... sounds like he's doing that guy thing of waiting until the end to change your plans on a whim. I'd be frustrated too. Is the song off for sure or can he be persuaded to stick it out? I would hope he wouldn't want your first dance song to be picked anew out of grumpiness and frustration. I like sucrets' idea... what would he think about that?

How does this work?  Does he talk over the song?  What does he say?  Do people actually come out?

  • Yeah...well, everyone is standing there watching, anyway.  He invites everyone out to join the couple in the middle of the song.  I've seen it at most weddings.

If I had my video on my computer, I'd show it to you, but I don't.  :(

  • And I believe he said something cheesy like "alright, everyone come on out and join the lovely couple for the rest of the song" (in his DJ voice).

Also, you could give your WP/parents a heads up that this will happen so they can pair up (with their dates or each other) and get the ball rolling. Even if no one else joins but them, it would do the trick.
