[QUOTE]I will say that at the showers I've seen this done, the bride gets a prize AND the winner gets a prize.

This is typically how I see it done at showers and how I've done it at showers where I've been the hostess.

  • I've had this happen to me once at a baby shower. The prizes were baby items: pacifier, wipes, snot sucker and the like.  I thought it was stupid and took the fun out of playing.

  • I haven't been to all that many showers, but the ones I went to didn't have that.

My one cousin's baby shower's favors were 'boo-boo bunnies' - washcloths folded in a certain way to hold an ice cube to put over a boo-boo.  I'm still childless and certainly was 4 years ago, so I didn't have much use for the bunny.

At my other cousin's shower, there was a raffle for whoever brought diapers.  Another cousin won and kept offering me things from her bath treats prize, but I felt weird taking anything since I didn't bring diapers.
  • It may be a Midwest thing, most showers I've gone to are like this. I stll remember the first time I went to a shower with my mom. I was probably in the 4th grade, one the first game and as a kid you can imagine how excited I was thinking I won the prize. I walked to the prize table, picked a wrapped gift and walked back to my seat thinking "do I open it now or wait" and when I sat down the person next to me whispered that the gifts to to the bride.  I walked over and handed it to the bride, she opened it and the shower continued. I haven't seen it at ALL showers but at most.
  • I don't think I've ever seen this, but then again, I loathe shower games and never participate anyways, so I've never 'won' anything.

For the few showers I've helped plan (both sister's wedding and baby showers), we got real gifts for the winners to keep.

Definitely not a Cleveland or Chicago Midwest area thing.  I have never seen this happen and I've been to many showers in my time.

Prizes are normally given to the guests when they win....little knicknacky things, like candles and what not.
  • What is the point in having prizes then?

I swear after 4 years of being here you would have though I would have heard everything.  Apparently not.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yeah, I don't get it.

  • Never heard of that.  Every shower I've been too the winner kept the prize.

  • This happened once at a baby shower, but it was worse IMO. We were asked to throw any change we had in a bag and then we would all get a chance to guess how much was in it. The person who was the closest would win all.

The joke? The person who guessed closes won all alright, All laundry detergent. The mom to be kept the money. Suuuuuper lame. Got a big ole o_0 from me.

  • I ended up getting home late last night and pretty much went straight to bed.  I hate closing then opening the next day.  Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was weird.  If precendent had been set with someone doing the whole "The bride will enjoy this/get more use out of this" then I would have followed suit.
