Anyone in the downtown/just outside downtown Chicago area have a recommendation for a mechanic that won't charge up the ass for a fix? J is down there right now for a job and his transmission is failing. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks!
I usually recommend my brother for a mechanic that doesn't charge out the ass for fix, but he's in the western suburbs ~30 miles from the city, so your H might not make it all the way there. Plus he doesn't work on transmissions.
According to Yelp, this mechanic (clicky) is good, but I have no idea about cost (a couple reviews mentioned they felt the shop was reasonable). They're on the far NW side of the city, about 7-10 minutes from the Loop with no traffic, with traffic it'd probably be 15-20 minutes. Transmissions (from what I know) are typically very expensive to fix. For a typical, non-luxury car (Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Chevy, Saturn, etc) a complete rebuild of the transmission should cost $2000-2500. If you have a German car (BMW, VW, Audi, or Mercedes), the price will be about double. Non-German luxury cars (Lexus, Acura, Cadillac) will likely be $2500-$3500.
Good luck to your H! Car repairs are terrible, but it's even worse that it happened while he's out of town!
I really like Fulton-Des Plaines garage. The owner Matt has always been terrific to me and I'm sure he'd help your H out. It's in the west loop - just west of downtown.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I will let J know what we found.
Amy J is staying with his cousin in the Pilsen area so kind of nearish to the west loop, I think?
