In Response to Re: I could never... : OMG, that's horrible.  Is it malignant?  Are they doing anything at all to try and get rid of it? Your poor SIL.

It's not really out of control or anything. She's known it's there for years but they can't do anything to remove it because of where is sits. It just causes her to be overweight and she has some issues with her moods and stuff, but that's about it. As long as it doesn't grow she should be fine with some minor symptoms.
In Response to Re: I could never... : You're still wrong. My SIL has a brain tumor that's pressing on her pituitary gland and that causes her to be overweight. She didn't ask for that to happen to her and she can't do a damn thing to change it. Take your high and mighty-ness somewhere else please.
    Posted by waltzingmatilda13
This is above and beyond what was being discussed before.  I'm very sorry about your SIL and I do understand that some people have certain medical conditions that inhibit their ability to lose weight.  However, the vast majority of people CAN control how much they weigh.  That's not "high and mighty" or "high horse," it's simple facts.  I'm sorry if it seems cold, but I'd feel like I was doing a disservice to my children if I allowed them to become overweight.

This is much different than saying than the comment I initially quoted, claiming that someone would want to kill themselves if they became paralyzed, which is also pretty freakin' cold.

    The two are much different.

  • She said she wouldn't want to live. She didn't say she'd kill herself. Way to be dramatic.
  • I see some kids with eating disorders in the future... (and yes, before you ask, I do indeed have a crystal ball. YWIA).

But you were saying that people can control their weight, but not control when they are born with disabilities. Same thing. She was born with this. It's still potato pahtato.

For the past 3 pages I was reading Vince Vaughn as Vin Diesel (and I was in agreement), until Arbs posted that picture and I realized I was confoosed. Vince is adorable and funny, c'mon!

    Ahh, thank you!

And as for the overweight children. My mom is overweight and my dad isn't.  I grew up taking after my mom.  Its not easy for me to stay my size (which isn't even super small, i'm about average)  And my dad would make random comments about my weight.  I love my pops, but I'd be lying if it didn't add to my paranoia about eating and working out.

I dunno, I don't think I would want to live either, at least not until I seriously adapted.

I got in a car accident in 2005 where I broke my pelvis and the ribs on my right side.  When I started coming out of shock, I was immobilized by a neck brace and pretty much fastened to the hospital bed.  The only thing I could move was my left arm.  And that completely freaked me out.  The idea of being unable to move ANYTHING would be terrifying.

  • Yeah, definitely planning to screw up my kids by offering healthy foods and limiting sitting in front of the TV.  I'm crossing my fingers for runway models, but if genetics fail us, I'm not opposed to introducing some cocaine into the situation.

  • Is locked-in syndrome like what Mos Def had in that House episode?  Where he was conscious of everything, but couldn't move AT ALL?

  • me, too, Kiki! I think all the guys in The Hangover are cute, except for the guy who plays the groom.

And TR - good memory! I remember that episode and I think that's what he had.

  • To clarify, this is the Vince Vaughn we're talking about?

And my mom was pretty obsessed with my food consumption and weight for some time. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think that's where my food issues come from.
