I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

I only go shopping 3 times a year for clothes. (no really options here).  So I can spend a lot at one time.

Now when I lived in the states.  I could easily spend 100-150 a month on clothes.  At the end of the year that is over $1200.

I do not spend like that now (of course living in here means I do not need high ticket items like coats, boots, etc.)

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Thanks Msmery.  I think the thing that got me really ticked off in the first place was that he started the conversation by saying, "I know I should have told you first....blahblahblah."  So he can't really plead ignorance on this one.  I guess he just didn't want to call while he was at the store, which I guess is understandable.

I'm a hell of a lot calmer about it now than I was an hour ago.

  • Think of it this way, at least he didn't take $3,500 out of his HSA account to go buy a new plasma TV for the living room.

  • I don't know the situation with your credit debt that you hid, but personally, I'd rather my H spend $800 on suits for work than spend small amounts on other random things that eventually add up to credit card debt that he then mislead me about.

I know that mens business clothes are frustratingly expensive... My H bought two business shirts, a tie and some new slacks last week and spent over $300 on them. That's fine, though, because he's a manager and ultimately these are items that he actually needs- albeit expensive items.

I too second the suggestion about 'play' money- H and I have a joint account, and most of our pay goes there, with a section of each pay going into our personal accounts for us to do as we please. It works well.
