If you take BCP...

Do you still get PMS-y and regular period symptoms like bloating and stuff the week of?  I do, but I've always kind of figured that when you're on BCP, you shouldn't because of the horomones and stuff.  Am I crazy?  Maybe it's all in my head.

I'm feeling PWish today so feel free to ignore if you think this is a stupid question, haha.

Re: If you take BCP...

  • I do, but it is significantly better than when I am off of it.  When I am off, my cramps are so bad they make me black out and last 2 days.  When I am on, I have mild cramping for a day that gets cured with a couple extra strength advil and a heating pad.

  • Yup, right on time! And I'm even getting it with my IUD. I thought all this shiit was supposed to stop!

  • Yes, yes I do.

Usually they're not as bad as they would be without: the bloating isn't as bad, and the cramps are more of a dull lower back pain than anything else. But once every three or four months I get slammed.
  • I still get all the symptoms, they aren't as bad but my emotions are way worse.

  • Yeah I still get some bloating, but barely any cramps..

And thanks, this thread has now made me dread going off the pill even more.

  • Ohhhhh yeah. The severity of it all depends on which particular brand I'm on. Currently everything is hunky dory until the week of my period and then it's like a full onslaught of suckiness. I haven't felt this horrible during my period since before I was on BCP. But it only happens once every three months, so I can deal.

The last BCP I was on made me crampy throughout the entire month. That sucked.

The best was when I first started BCP. I would hardly cramp or anything. I think my body is just getting used to it now. I"m afraid to know how bad everything will be once I get off it though.
  • Sometimes I do, but usually not. Last cycle I definitely had PMS one day.

  • I've been on it for 8 years. I don't get really bloated, but I do get migraines. Always the day before I will have a migraine (I can't see, or stand any noise). I do notice that I can get pretty grouchy and a lot more emotional the three-four days before (When I am on in inactive pills). But, I will take all that over what I had to deal with before the pill.

Yes, and somehow over time, the PMSing got worse than when I wasn't on the pill. I've stopped taking BCP because of that.
  • Birth control was the devil for me.

I finally felt like a normal, sane human again when I stopped the pill.

    It makes me crazy.

Now, I'm crazy, just a more delightful kind.

So, in short, I shouldn't have opened this thread and have now bestowed useless information ONCE AGAIN to my magical TR.

    Agreed.

  • I don't but I never really got them before starting the pill. I usually get mild cramps the day it starts.
  • I dunno, I kinda do.  But I'm kind of a moody, dramatic and bitchy person anyways.

Here's the question I have - while on BCP, does your period ever come early?  Today is Tuesday and I'm getting - sorry if it's TMI, but "periodish" activity and I shouldn't be getting my period til next week.  I take my pills at the same time every night, so, what gives!?

Fishy, you should always bestow your magicalness. It must be spread.

As far as  the question goes, I tried to go off of it. It was a bad, bad thing. I'm back on it - regular pill, but taking active pills back to back for 3 months. The past 3 months have sucked, but looks like the problem I was having cleared up. So far. This new one better clear up, though.

  • Damn you Dodgers! I went home from school almost monthly because of how much my cramps sucked.

My mom decided to just randomly tell me a few months ago in casual conversation that the reason she had her hysterectomy was because of endometriosis and horrible cramping and other problems. She never felt the need to tell me this before! I was like THANKS MOM!
  • I still have symptoms, but they're much more mild. When I'm off it, my cramps are unbearable and I think my mood swings are worse off it than on it.

  • A bit, yeah, but not too bad. But it wasn't all that terrible before I went on BCP.

My problem is that BCP kills my desire for certain activities, which I guess means that it acts as BCP by preventing the act entirely. I'm hoping to go to my doctor next week and find a different brand that will fix this.

  • I always look forward to your useless information Fishy :)

I'm hoping to get off bc next year.  I'm a little too scared to put my faith in NFP and the self control of H and I to use other methods just yet, haha.  Because an accident right now would not be good financially.

But yeah, Saturday night I was crying in the car on the way home from dinner telling H, "I don't know what's wrong with me!" and then I realized what it probably was, haha.  And the bloating, omg, it's so uncomfortable.  And it's been getting worse the last couple of months for some reason.

  • Sarah, I have yet to find a brand that does. :(

Thats why Mr. Birdie and I will be having a serious discussion on NFP in 5 months, 3 weeks and 6 days.

This is exactly why my mom had a hysterectomy.  Severe endometriosis.  I don't know if it's genetic?  I hope not.

  • I just got the IUD about a month and a half ago, and it's been CONSTANT emotional PMS. I'll just start yelling and crying at the most random times. If something even slightly annoys me, I want to punch someone in the head. Not kidding.

A friend of mine just got one recently, too, and her docter told her things could be a little tumultuous for like, six months...

  • It can be. :( I would get tested for it if it wasn't invasive to do so. So I just live with it.

My current BCP makes me an extra special kind of crazy during that time of month. It was especially bad at first because I was still getting used to it. I met LVB and KyKate around this time, so I'm sure they thought I was a nutjob!
  • AATB- I'll get some spotting sometimes between periods.  Especially if I skip my period a month.  Man I'm going to miss being able to manipulate it.

Milkduds- thanks I hope so too.  I plan on going off of it when H leaves for his next deployment so that I have a lot of time to adjust to it.  I'm just hoping that the hormone changes don't make me a sobbing mess while he is gone.

  • I wish I could come off of BCP.  I still have horrendous cramps with it, so I don't think it does much for me besides shorten the length of my period.  My mom keeps talking about snagging me an IUD, but I haven't built up the balls to actually tell her to do it yet.

I used to be okay. I had to switch brands to orthotricyclen-lo a few years ago because my undergrad university didn't carry my other one anymore (I think it was Mircette), and looking back now I'm thinking that's when the problem started. I'm hoping there's something else out there that makes me feel like a person again.

I was also an emotional disaster when taking Yaz (which I am convinced is the devil). The dog would look at me with just a slight 'judging' face (or so my mind perceived) and I would break down and cry to H about how the dog hated me and how I was sure the cat also hated me since she wouldn't sit on my lap. Or when the chicken wings I made stuck to the pan and I was so upset I threw the pan and the baked-on wings in the trash. Yeah.
  • That's what I was on before my current BCP. I was always a fan of Loestrin (I think the name is). It was the first one I was on and seemed to do the best job.
  • You ladies need to be prepared.  I go off mine in about 10 days.  HOLY crap am I crazy.
