NWR: Do you tip when your car goes in for service?

I usually tip with oil changes and inspections. But, my car is at the dealership now for a faulty tail light that I keep replacing and it keeps going out. Someone told me service departments at dealerships don't accept tips. Is this true?

I would never ever tip. They make enough money off of you already.

FI works for a dealership and the only time I hear him getting tips is if they are driving someone back to work or to their home. I wouldn't say that dealerships don't "accept" tips, but I've never heard of tipping for getting your car serviced.

I would never tip, you don't even see the people who are doing anything with your car, so to give a tip to the service person who tells you to spend more money is just a waste IMO.

I definitely do not tip for oil changes or any car repair.
Agreed ~ the prices are exorbitant enough as it is. Those guys probably make a better salary than I do!

I've never tip for any service on my car. That is their job and I am already paying enough. It's not like they are making $2.15 an hour like a waiter does and their pay is based off of tips.

What PPs said. Have you ever looked at what they are charging you per hour for labor? It's WELL north of $30, so even when you take out taxes, they are getting a hefty chunk of change to work on your car.

I have never even heard of tipping for service on your car. That is crazy to me- never ever would I tip, or even think of tipping for anything. They get enough of my money

I used to work in a dealership service department and no one ever tipped the advisors or techs.  They make pretty good money.  Once in a while customers would tip the valets but it was definitely not expected.
