Though we had ours ready to go at the one year mark, we sent out ours 6 months out. It depends on when you are having it and if you have a lot of out of town guests. If you are having yours near a holiday or peak vacation time, I would send it out earlier than 6 months.
We are June 15th. We do have a few friends and family coming from PA, FL, and CA.
I have a silly reason for wanting to wait... My hair is highlighted blonde and my natural color is dark brown, which it is most of the time. In 8 weeks, I will be back to my natural color and was thinking of waiting to do our engagement pics till then (We may use one of our engagement shots for the save the date).
My finace clearly thinks I am nuts and wants to do them ASAP =\
I don't think it's silly to want to wait to do your engagement pictures. You have to be happy with the way you look in them!
We set STDs for our November wedding in January. We wanted to wait until after the holidays so they wouldn't get lost in the shuffle of holiday cards and such.
We sent them in Feb for an Oct wedding (though we got engaged in Dec and booked the venue in late Jan, so we didn't have a lot of time to wait on sending them!)
We are sending them out now for our March 2012wedding. Most family is local but some of my fiance's family is from the south so we want them to have plenty of time to find a great price on the flight out here. Also my Zia (Aunt) has been telling everyone I am getting married in March of 2013.
"Do I look like a killer to you?"
"Yes, you kill my patience."

In all honesty...people are going to do what they want, even if you send out a save the date. If you want to wait for your hair for pictures, then wait. Just get the world out through word of mouth for now. If you send them out in 2 more months for a June wedding, I think you'll be fine.
I sent my save the date cards 6 months before the wedding. I think that if you want to wait 8 wks to have your hair with your natural color in the pictures you should wait. I don't know how was everybodyelse's experience... but with me, everyone asked us all the time when we would get married. So everybody knew the date of the wedding before the save the dates.
We sent them out in October for our late May wedding... if we had had more out of country guests (we only had three - but had a ton of out of state guests) we would have sent them a little earlier.

Between me, my fiance, and both sets of parents, the world already knows! It's just the point that I don't want my look (for ppl I don't know but have to invite, ie: my fiance's family from other states) to be all over the place. I'm glad other people understand... I am even happier that 8-9mos in advace is still appropriate.
We sent ours out in November since we have a July wedding so about 8 months. If I had known where we were getting married earlier, I would've sent them out even sooner.
People were happy for the notice since a few already had their vacations set and had enough time to move their dates around.

Thanks all :)
OMG. We are 3.5 months out and haven't done them yet. I thought 6 months was about the average. We are extremely late!
