What do you do with your ring?

My engagement ring is my first piece of grown up jewelry. I've worn plent of jewelry in the past, but it was all inexpensive costume jewelry, stuff I didn't worry about too much.

I am terrified of losing or damaging my ring. What do you ladies do with yours when your cooking/doing dishes/doing anything else messy that requires your hands to be submerged? Do you just leave it on? I've been taking mine off for cooking, doing dishes, and showering. Last night I forgot I left my ring on top of the refrigerator (next to the sink) and panicked this morning when I woke up without it.

I also need to figure out what I'm going to do with the ring while I'm working. Normally it's not a problem, but every now and again I'll have to do a repair(Conductive metal + live electronics = owwie!). So far I've just stuck the ring in my pocket, but I'm afraid I'll lose it if I keep that up.

Re: What do you do with your ring?

  • Do you wear a necklace every day? If so, it would be easy to slip the ring onto the necklace so it's still safe but off your hand.

  • I wear my ring all the time. I shower with it on as well as wash dishes, cook (unless I am going to be getting my hand into something really messy) I sleep with it on, The Only thing I willingly take it off for is cleaning it, and going whitewater rafting.

My FI bought the warranty on my ring so even if something happened to it, its covered. Just use good judgement with it and you will be fine. Rings and diamonds are not by an means fragile, they can take what you do to it.

  • Good morning. I usually take the ring off when I'm putting on lotion or using hair products that require me to rub something in. I don't want to get anything in between the crevices.

Yeah I do that as well. Forgot to put that in my original comment.

  • You could get a ring holder for your night stand or the kitchen and then get in the habit of always putting it on the stand when you take it off.  You could do something similar at work.  My ring stand is a little cat with its tail pointing up.  You could also use a cute dish.

After we were first engaged, I would put it on the ear piece of my glasses when I went to bed.   Now i try to use  the ring stand whenever I take it off.  When I go to the gym or outside to do yard work I put it on the caribeaner (sp?) I use with my key chain.  Probably not the safest place for it, but it works for me.

  • Usually, when doing dishes or something, I will give it to FI to put in his pocket since he's generally better about remembering it's there, but when he's not around I put it in my own pocket. I guess I've been wearing rings long enough that I usually feel naked without them and remember to grab them if I take them off before I leave the house, but I like entropic's suggestion of putting it on a necklace.

<div>This. The only time I ever take it off is when I'm doing something REALLY messy with it- making meatballs, applying lotion, digging in the mud... things that would be in the crevices in between the diamonds and a PAIN to get out. Otherwise it is on my finger and stays there. In the case when I do take it off, I keep it on my nightstand next to my alarm clock. </div>

  • I usually always take my ring off for cooking and dishes. Sometimes I forget.

I never shower with it on. I also never sleep with it on. I learned the hard way not to. My ring is a princess cut, and the edges are kinda sharp... I woke up one morning with a gash on my cheek from my ring (I'm one of those who has to have my hands up against my face when I sleep...). So now I make sure to take it off before bed. It was quite interesting trying to explain to people why there was a gash on my cheek for a while.

  • If I am upstairs, I'll put it in my ring holder dish in my bathroom (I am SO happy to have my own bathroom!!) that is in the corner of the counter away from the sink. (I'll even keep it there if my hands are swollen at night and go to bed so I see it again in the morning when I'm getting ready)

If I am downstairs I'll put it in the spoon rest/holder thing in the kitchen near the stove and AWAY from the sink LOL   (I have a crazy paranoia of dropping it down the sink!)

I really only take my rings off when I am doing dishes, showering, something really dirty or applying lotion or going to the gym.

I HAVE to leave it in these 2 places otherwise I'll run around the house like a mad woman looking for it because I will forget where it is!!

  • I take it off when I get home and put it in the ring box by my night stand. I paint a lot so I worry about getting paints all over it (I can be messy at times). Plus I don't like washing dishes with it on orating dinner (again messy girl here)

  • I almost always wear it....I never shower with it on.  I normally take it off while cleaning & doing the dishes and maybe cooking/baking depending what I'm making...

I do not recommend putting it on a necklace just because that could easily fall off without you realizing it as well.  I'd get a ring holder for the kitchen or for your bedroom...
  • I usually do most things with my ring on. I will wash dishes and cook (although my definition of cook is not getting my hands that dirty) with it on. Sometimes I take it off to shower, but I always leave it on the vanity on the hook of my eye glasses so that when I get out of the shower to put my glasses on, I have my ring right there. At night I usually don't sleep with it on because it's uncomfortable, so I keep it in the original ring box (the box he used to propose) on my night stand. Like PP said, the ring can pretty much handle anything you throw at it, and if your FI got the warranty like mine did, then you shouldn't worry too much about it. :)

I take my rings off every night b/c my fingers sometimes swell at night. I put them in a Tiffany's pouch that I got a necklace in a few years back and that sits on the dresser in our bedroom.

I also take my rings off more now for washing my hands since I am always using hand sanitizer after washing. I usually just leave them in my office at work if I go to the restroom or by the sink at home until I'm finished sanitzing my hands.

DH is a bartender and sometimes takes his ring off when he's washing glasses or changing kegs. He has this clip thingy on his keychain that he hooks his ring to until its time to put it back on.

  • I wear mine all the time unless I am showering, sleeping, or doing something adventurous (rock climbing, splunking, scuba diving, etc).

  • I take my ring off when I shower, wash my hands, do the dishes, cook, bake or do anything messy. I also take my ring off when I sleep.. put it in the ring box that came with my ring, and then when I wake up in the morning, after I wash my face and put on my makeup I put it back on. Then I wear it throughout the whole day.

Splunking is going caving adventure style - repel in, climb around in the cave to explore it with just a head lamp and basically see how much you can explore and how dirty you get.

  • I never take mine off... ever. When I first was engaged I would take it off for things but I'm forgetful and left it random places and would go out without it and Fl got mad. So I stopped taking it off. Its not fragile and its easily cleaned.
If I had to take it off for work reasons I would wear a necklace and put it on there while doing work tasks.
  • I almost always keep it on, showering, washing my hands, at night ect. The only times i take mine off is if im gardening or cooking / cutting raw meat or messy messy foods that require hand contact. For that I found a glass ring holder at a local 2nd hand store and use it away from the sink! I seems to be pretty common to have a fear of dropping it down the sink. If I where you I would find a nice small dish or ring holder and keep it in the kitchen (not next to the sink) and one in your bedroom or bathroom. My sister has a nice wooden box (from brilliant earth) that she keeps hers in. You just have to find what will work for you in your normal day to day hustle and bustle.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I need to get a couple of those ring holder things. I've seen the little cat statues with its tail up, and now I know what the heck they're for.
  • I rarely take my ring off for anything other than putting lotion on or rolling out cookies, but if you do frequently, I'd recommend some of those ring holders -- you can put one in each place you frequently take yours off. There are some really cute ones! I've seen one that's an elephant with its trunk up and I think I might get that to put in the kitchen.

I have an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and throw my rings in that every morning while I'm moisturizing and washing my face and stuff. Then they get a quick little cleaning, and I won't worry about knocking them off the counter.

When I used to take off a ring from my parents every night from swelling, I put it on an earpiece of my glasses like a PP mentioned...I often forgot to put it on in the morning but then I'd remember when it was hanging from my glasses :P

For taking it off at work, maybe just getting into a routine will help. FI is an electrical engineer and is really worried because he can't/won't wear it in the lab, but doesn't want to not wear his ring (a lot of his co-workers just don't wear theirs). He noticed that one of the guys takes his off and puts it in his pocket EVERY time he walks into the lab, and puts it back on EVERY time he leaves. He talked to him about it and the guy said it was frustrating at first but it became habit after a while...the ring came off or went back on every time he went through that door.

  • I take my ring off for showering, putting on lotion, doing dishes, and cooking.  I keep a ring holder in the bathroom and in the kitchen.

  • I take off my ring to shower, wash my hands, and put on lotion.  Anywhere I do these 3 things, I have a ring bowl that matches the decor.

Otherwise, my ring is on at all times.  When Albert bought the ring, it came with diamond insurance (IE: If anything happens to my ring, the diamond, etc) they replace it

  • i wear mine most of the time, i guess. i take them off when i shower, do dishes, cook with raw meat, etc. i keep them on when i wash my hands, but i do move them from finger to finger when i'm drying.
when i take them off i put them in their box, which goes insideof another box. i'm very protective of them.

  • My engagement is also my first really nice piece of jewelry, I take it when putting on lotion, taking a shower, eating something messy, or cooking something that I have to get my hands messy and washing my hands (unless i'm at a public place then I keep it on). When I take it off at home I put in my jewelry box that way it's safe, one time I left it on the counter and our kitten knocked it off, thankfully FI saw her and got it.
    image
  • Oh and at work could you slip it on a chain around your neck, that was my friends husband does and probably what FI will do as well when he'd at work cause it's dangerous where he works to wear a ring.
    image
  • when i do dishes i take it off and leave it in a little bowl that sits on the window sill with my other ring.  that way i know where it is, and even if it does fall off the sill, the sink is far enough away that it wouldnt get in there.  as for showers, i leave it on the top of the dresser.
  • I rarely ever take mine off.  I work in an operating room and when I scrub, I have to take it off.  I have a "skirt pin"  It's essentially a big diaper pin.  I pin it through my scrub shirt and *around* my bra strap.  That way, I CANNOT take of my top with out taking the pin off.

I have to put it in a drawer in the bathroom with my watch when I take it off at home.  Other wise, the cats might take off with it.  They've already taken one of my irreplaceable Hawaiian Heirloom rings.
