I have always had problems with getting alterations done. It seems that not many of the seamstresses I've been to realize that a plus size person comes in many different body types and that you can't just use the same alteration techniques/ratios as you would on a smaller person. I am also 6' tall so my alterations may be a challenge.

The last woman I used (who came highly recommended) was a 4'10, 70lb woman who barely spoke English but knew enough to say "Oh, you big girl, ah?" and "Oh, you mother feed you good, eh?" and - my favorite - "You need stop eating so much. You too big." That is NOT the type of experience I want to go through again, as it was rather humiliating and unpleasant.

Are there any plus size Chicago brides here who have someone they have used successfully? I know most seamstresses will say they CAN do the alterations, but I'm looking specifically for someone with extensive experience with plus sized customers.  I am not far from O'Hare.

I've also cross-posted on the Chicago board, hoping for great recommendations.  I just figured I'd post here as well, since I'm probably not the only one who has had bad experiences with seamstresses.

im from north west illinois, about 3 hours west of you guys. have you checked at the bridal salon that bought your dress from? i dont know how far you are willing to travel.

I bought my dress online, sight  unseen, because the size 10's that all the bridal salons (including David's Bridal and HoB) carry wouldn't fit past my thighs.  Yup, I'm a risk-taker.

Ideally, I'd like to stay within an hour of the Chicago area, but will do what I have to do if there's someone who is experienced with plus sized brides.

I'm in Chicago and also ordered my dress online... but, I'm having it tailored at David's.  I think someone else in the Chicago board already recommended  Mary Catomy, who I'd heard great things about.  Good luck!

I know a lot of people have gone to Mary and have been satisfied with the end result.  I just don't know if she has ever done a plus size person.  I will have to check back and hopefully someone will have said yes by now - she was one of the first people I thought about.  But I know she got her start doing it as a side business from her home and I just want to make sure she has the skills/ability to handle plus size alterations.

Have your tried you local cleaners, My FI gets his suit cleaned and they will do alteration at there store, I was lucky and do not need any alterations, my girls my need and we will go there
