What to throw at the Bride and Groom as they exit

Hey ladies,

I am trying to figure out what we should have for everyone to throw or wave as we exit. Our church will not allow sparklers which I wanted to do so now I am thinking bubbles, paper air planes (we have been in a long distance relationship for over a year) or wands with ribbon. Thoughts or any ideas yall have would be great? I am open to hear anything. Since its a fall wedding anything fall would be great too. Smile

Re: What to throw at the Bride and Groom as they exit

  • I've heard a lot of people say that bubbles can stain your dress so I'd stray from that. Our church won't let us throw anything, which is fine by me because personally I don't want to get hit in the face/eyes with stuff.

The paper airplanes would be really cute (we were long distance for 4 years so I can appreciate that) but they might be a little sharp / a safety hazard. However, I think guests, especially kids, would think that was fun/unique.

Personally not a big fan of ribbons/wands. If I had to choose something, I'd say birdseed. Easy to clean up if it gets on you, ok for the environment, etc.
  • I know a lot of things like rice and bird seed have been banned due to rats in a lot of places. The paper airplane thing would be funny, but who would clean them up? I'm not really sure what else to suggest to you... I know the bubbles are popular just as long as they aren't dyed because I have heard of them staining dresses.

For us, we are having a vintage farm themed wedding, so we are handing guests a cowbell to ring when we come down the aisle together. Although at this point, when I tell others that we are using cowbells, they always say "What? They are throwing cowbells at you??" I'm rather sick of hearing that. I wish people didn't say stupid stuff sometimes.
  • We're doing birdseed, but we're getting married outdoor at a resort up north, so there isn't the 'rat' problem to worry about lol
  • I like the wands with ribbons idea... Very whimsical! I would definitely not do the paper airplanes. I am envisioning my sixth grade teacher's monotone lecture about the dangers of sharp objects and eyes. "This is your cornea... This is your cornea with a paper airplane through the middle..."
  • we're handing out noisemakers (the metal ones you might use on NYE) and asking our guests to celebrate with us by ringing them as we walk back down the aisle.  it's one of my favorite details.
  • Wands with ribbons, noisemakers (LOVE that idea!), and the like seem like the safest bets to me. Something that isn't actually thrown. The paper airplanes is cute, but I saw a wedding video awhile back where they did that and they looked a little concerned and were legit dodging airplanes. =/
  • If you want something colorful, a girl on the DFW boards did Fruity Pebbles not that long ago and it made for some really cute pictures.

I've also heard of using lavender because it's pretty AND smells good. :)

  • One thing NOT to do is throw glitter - did anyone see that episode of 4 Weddings?? OMG can you imagine trying to get that out???

I made wands because I didn't want a mess or stains.
    They look like this:

  • I as well am doing ribbon wands. Have already started working on them. They are like a wedding favor/fairwell all in one. We can't have bubbles (marble steps), can't throw birdseed (didn't want to anyways), or any other flowers. We are having a shabby-chic/vintage/DIY wedding so the wands worked out perfectly! Also as we leave the reception venue we are doing sparklers! Just a thought!!

  • We are HUGE hockey fans so we made mini hockey sticks in our wedding colors and one side says our last name (like the brand of the stick) and the other side is our wedding date. When we leave the church the guest will make a path and raise their sticks as we leave. These are not favors by all means, just something different then the traditional bubbles.
