What is appropriate way to address envelopes?

Do I put Mr & Mrs John Smith or is John & Susan Smith more appropriate?
Also, if there are kids in the family do I address each kid or can I put & family?
Thanks!

On the outer envelope, put Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.

    On the inner envelope, put

    Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Zach and Mark (children in age order - oldest to youngest)
  • On a similar note, what order do you list the names?  Is it wife then husband, or vice versa?  I always get that confused.

Ladies first - Susan and John Smith.
  • Just wondering, where would you use their first names on an wedding invitation?

If you address the outer envelope to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, you could address the inner envelope to Susan and John Smith.

Some people like to include the woman's name on the mailing envelope.  I find Mrs. Susan and Mr. John Smith to be incredibly awkward, so in this case I would address it to Susan and John Smith without using titles.
  • First names don't belong on the inner envelope.  That's where you address by titles without names.  The only first names that go on the inner are those of the children or guests.
  • Thank you all, you were vrey helpful! :)
