Not necessarily tacky, but you may have a low response rate. Only a couple of my friends have tried this, and they had response rates between 20-30%. I'm not sure what the cause was.
Not tacky. But, it does send the message that it is a more casual event. A mailed RSVP has some sense of formality about it that email doesn't give. Of course, you'll also need an alternate for those who don't do email.
I've also seen/heard that people don't respond as well when you use email. Maybe they're just lazy, or maybe it's a function of sending the more casual tone, or maybe it's not causal at all. But I wouldn't go this route if you need an exact head count.
Personally, I like RSVP through wedding websites as opposed to just e-mail - since I visit the website anyway and via phone is good additional option. However, I would include a mail-in RSVP for less tech savy guests.
