townhome/apartment hunting...

My FI and I are going to check out 4 apartments/townhome in a city that he accepted a new job (about 2 hours away from where we currently live and I'd prefer to staywhere we are... but thats a whole other story) Anyways, what are some questions to ask from your experience? I got rent, pet policy, what i need to pay for utilites, parking/garages. What are some things I might be missing to ask?? Thanks!!!

Security deposit?  Air-conditioning?  Upgrades available (we could pay an extra $50 per month for them to replace the carpet with hard surface, which is so much better for my allergies!).  Trash?  Ummm that's all I can think of.  Good luck!

Ask if  the contract has to be for 6 months or a year.  If you end the contract before how much will ou have to pay?

Security system, gas vs. electric appliances, what's allowed for TV (satellite vs. cable vs. community-owned system), HOA fees (if going for a townhome), does that community have a repairman/handyman on site, and I would pull any crime statistics for the area as well.

Late rent policies, decorating policies, yearly rent increase (like how do they work renewals)

Along with everyone PPs said, check out if they plan on doing any renovations in the forseeable future... FI and I have a townhouse (buy, not rent), and we're about halfway through having to pay a $2500 fee for a roof upgrade... Every unit (rent or buy) is required to pay this either upfront or in installments for the next year-ish... It's an unexpected expense we're required to pay if we want to continue living here... but something they'd been planning on for a while - we just hadn't thought to ask...
