Question for the Married Ladies

My FI and I are looking for honemoon ideas. We are both outdoorsey sorts who are looking to get lost for a month or so and could use some suggestions from people who have been various spots. Any ideas are welcome from you all... Thank you Smile

Re: Question for the Married Ladies

  • Are you looking for a honeymoon spot in the U.S. or somewhere international? What is your budget? Are you planning to go for about a month?  Knowing that will help me to better recommend a destination.

That being said, the two best "outdoorsy" vacations with lots of natural beauty and outdoor activities that I have gone on are Colorado and Vietnam.
  • We are looking for International as neither of us have been out of country to awhile now... We are planning to be gone for about a month and are saving up the money at this point to be able to go. Plus his parents are helping with the catering cost of the weddingwhich is a huge expense. He is saying that we are going to have almost 10,000 cash just on our end to budget for it...

There are lots of great outdoorsy thing to do in Costa Rica.  Zip lining, caving, white water rafting etc and It could be done within your budget.  There are beach areas and mountain areas.
ETA I'm not married yet , but I really enjoyed that trip!

  • Well since your budget and time are both fairly generous, and you are looking for somewhere international, I can't recommend Vietnam enough.  It sounds like an odd place to travel, but it is the most naturally gorgeous place I have ever visited.  It has both mountains, shoreline, and jungle climates, so the outdoor possibilities are endless.  One of my favorite memories is hiking and riding motorcycles through the mountains.  I also had the opportunity to go boating in an area called Halong Bay.  There are also many activities to do in the larger cities if you don't want to do entirely outdoor activities.  The food there is amazing as well, especially if you love sea food.  The French influence there makes for a really interesting blend of cuisines.  Airfare to travel there will be pricey, but one you are in the country, the cost is very low.  I sometimes ate dinner for less than $5 (U.S. money).  Upscale restaurants were still often under $15 or $20.  You could expand your honeymoon to additional locations in the area, such as Thailand or Bali, but I haven't been there, so I can't speak to those.
  • We had a really unconventional honeymoon.  We went to Germany and worked on an organic farm for 3 months.  You volunteer so you are free to come and go.  I loved it.  We went and did fun things on the weekend.  The cool thing about the site is that it in is all sorts of countries so you could go anywhere.  Austria, Switzerland and Northern Italy also have some beautiful outdoor places.   The website is www.wwoof.org if you are interested in checking it out.

  • You may want to do a search according to your preferred activity. I cycle and have taken trips that allow me to cycle in other areas of the U.S., etc. Seattle, Portland, SF to LA. Hawaii In August we are cycling to Vancouver. There is a vacation that allows you to cycle thru Ireland and Scotland and golf and hike too.  My FI surfs, he has traveled to areas where he can experience a different type of surf.

I  believe there is a company called Outdoor Adventures were you can book a trip with activities along with it. I've never used it myself but have heard great things.

There is another site VRBO.com, you can rent a vacation home in an area you'd like to experience and then hike, bike, surf, run, etc. We did this in Hawaii.

    Good luck
  • Well, I can't really help internationally, but we had exactly the type of honeymoon you are talking about, just here in the USA.

We went to Cour d' Alene ID, up into the Rocky Mountains.  There's a resort/ranch there there called Red Horse Mountain Ranch.  It. Is. AWESOME.

We got our own private cabin with a huge hot-tub next to it.  They had activities all day, every day that you could choose to do.  We did challenge courses, zip-lining, horse riding, geocaching, kayaking, fishing, archery, and clay pigeon shooting.  It was a really busy honeymoon, and a freakin blast!

They even designated our week as a wine-tasting week, and we were given tastings every evening with dinner.  They had a SUPER good chef on staff too.

We definitely plan on going back for an anniversary, one of these years.

I highly recommend it! I'm a busy body, so I knew the honeymoon couldn't just be sitting around. The evenings in the hot tub were wonderful. We drank wine and watched the stars while we soothed our sore muscles. I love new life experiences like that.

  • I'm also looking for some adventure! FI wanted to go backcountry camping but I'd rather shower and not carry my life on my back (35-40 degree curvature scoliosis = constant back pain, especially when carrying a heavy load). So we're compromising by finding a place where we can go hiking as well as have some lazy time. Our final three are Big Sur/Sonoma, St. Lucia and Belize.
  • If you would prefer a trip to another country, the Canadian Rockies are gorgeous- lots of great hiking there!
