Do ushers wear tuxes? Can they?

I only have one bridemaid - My sister, as my Maid of Honor.  My Fiance has his best friend as his Best Man.  He really wanted to have his 4 other friends in the wedding and so I told him that they can be ushers.  Do ushers wear tuxedos?  Should they? I feel like it will make them feel like more a part of the wedding without actually being Groomsmen.

Re: Do ushers wear tuxes? Can they?

  • The ushers in DD's wedding did wear tuxes (evening ceremony and reception).  One was a teenager, actively growing and would rather rent a tux then buy a suit that won't fit in six months. One was a broke college student that didn't own a suit that fit, since DD and SIL got a free tux with the number of rentals they got, they gave it to him.  The third could have gone either way (owned a suit but didn't mind renting a tux) so he got one as well.

A long way of saying, it isn't required, but if it is OK with them, there is no reason they can't.
  • if you want the discount that most places give like groom gets  a free tux rental with x amount of tuxes rented then i would go that rute my brother had only his 2 best friends in the wedding he wanted to get the free tux deal so he had both my  dad and his fil wear a tux plus he had my brother wear a tux so he could get the discount
  • Our ushers just wore nice suits (and the girl usher wore a nice blue dress that looked nothing like the bridesmaids')

He wants them in the wedding but you dictated that means they get to be ushers? Why can't they be groomsmen?

Our ushers (H's cousins) wanted to match the WP, so they opted to rent tuxes. We were fine with them wearing suits if they'd wanted to. However, one is in his teens and still growing (quickly) and the other is 19 and didn't feel he would have use for a suit any time soon.
  • I think it's really just a matter of what you want.  My brothers are my ushers and they are wearing tux's because our tux place provides a free limo if a certain number of tuxes are rented.
  • I have hosts and hostesses and they are wearing the same thing as the groomsman and bridesmaids. They are all important to myself and my FI and I want them in the pictures as well. They are still apart of the wedding party, the only difference is they aren't standing up. They will also sit at the head table at the reception.
