Getting in Shape

Intro

I don't know who all is on this board, but I think most everyone knows me from around other boards. I'm Addie and I need to get back in shape!

I lost 20 pounds before my wedding purely from stress. My wedding planning was fairly stress-free, but there were other life things going on that were causing me a great deal of stress. When people would ask me how I was losing weight, I lied and said I was just eating better and exercising more b/c I knew it wasn't a healthy way to lose weight. I wasn't doing it on purpose, though. I just wasn't hungry.

After losing that weight, I lost another 10 pounds (so 30 total) on purpose and by ACTUALLY eating better and getting more exercise. That was easy b/c we were in the process of making a move from TX to VA, and I spent weeks cleaning, packing, and hauling stuff to the dumpster multiple times a day. I felt great!

I took this year off from teaching and have settled into a very lazy lifestyle which consists mostly of Knotting and watching TV. I stepped on the scale recently, and it looks like I have put back on about 15 pounds since the move.

Lia talked me into joining you ladies here to help keep me motivated and supported to get back to where I was. I am dreading the daily acountability check-ins!

Re: Intro

  • Hi and Welcome to THIS board :)

The daily check-ins are great, and there are so many ideas for new exercise moves or recipes.. This board definitely comes in handy.
Hope you stick around with us!
  • Welcome!  I do recognize your siggy and username, but don't think we've conversed much before (I lurk on a lot of other boards, but don't often contribute elsewhere.)

First, not going to lie, I am extremely jealous of your current lifestyle :)

Don't dread the accountability!  Lots of us check in there even on bad days or rest days, and I really feel like it's that, more than the 'positive accountability,' that motivates and keeps so many of us from turning one bad day into a bad week.  There is no shame in a failed workout or eating day once in awhile!

What do you like to do in terms of workouts?  Do you use MFP or any other sites to track food?

  • Hi, Addie! Welcome to the Getting in Shape board. I love the accountability threads. Everyone is very supportive and motivating. I've learned a lot about nutrition and exercise since joining this group.

What do I like to do for workouts?  NOTHING. I hate it. I hate exercising, which I know is going to be my biggest challenge. I do like to walk, so I started that yesterday. To start, that will probably be all I do, just to get myself in the habit of doing SOME form of exercise until I can move on to more rigorous workouts. I just don't trust myself to stick to a major exercise routine yet. I haven't looked at any of the food tracking sites yet.

  • Hi!! I recognize you from around other boards, but I barely ever post anywhere but here. I just like to read. But welcome to the club!

  • Walking is so good for your body, so good for you!  I think you have a great approach in starting slowly and working up to a bit of a routine.

I do recommend a site like MyFitnessPal for tracking food intake.  Even if you aren't into tracking regularly, it is wonderful to do for a week or so in the beginning, just to really be able to see what you are actually putting into your body (not enough protein, undereating or overeating calories, a ton of sugar, etc.)

  • I agree with everyone else - looking forward to your check-ins on accountability! You'll grow to love it.

It's also great that you're starting slow...no one will tell you that it's a good idea to change everything overnight. For lasting change it's better to take small baby steps towards improvement :)

  • Thanks for the warm welcome!

  • I lurk a lot, so I feel like I know you! Welcome!

Remember this - walking, no matter how slowly, is still doing SOMETHING. One of my favorite quotes is "Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. Do something. Anything!" (In theory, it's about veganism, but I think it applies to most areas of life!)

I will be the voice of dissent here and say that online food tracking systems just don't work for me (and I have tried them ALL). I know the amount of calories in my food because I read the labels and do the math in my head, and it's easier for me to jot it down on paper somewhere. Right now I've been logging my calorie counts in my day-planner (let's be real, it's a wedding planner that I sometimes write work things in), and then I can add up my total loss for the day/week/month. I just find online entering too tedious.

Whatever works for you is what you will stick with!

  • I think I need to get in on this board too. I've been at a plateau and slacking lately.

The only thing I can suggest is to hide the scale. If you fixate on the number it's not going to change, especially if you end up building muscle. Go by the way your clothes fit and the way you feel.
