For my ceremony, FI and I are planning on releasing two doves (white homing pigeons) by hand. I think this is a beautiful symbol of mates for life. I also think the dove release photos are stunning and I am looking forward to it.
However, I'm a bit discouraged by all the negative views about releasing doves! I feel like people don't know what they're talking about when they say it's cruel and the birds could die in their "new environment". We are going through a reputable breeder and the birds are trained to find their way home (it's local). From what I understand, the birds are given a special diet so they will not poop for the big moment, but once they return home, they are fed to their heart's content.
I think many critics of dove releases are HUGE hypocrites for decrying a symbolic gesture of love when I'm guessing the majority of them eat meat or use animals in other ways. (I on the other hand have been a vegetarian for over 3 years because of animal rights.)
Finally, releasing doves is not necessarily expensive--we are paying $150 total for 2 birds.
Am I missing something?
