**No No Word**

edited May 2013 in Chit Chat
I just got back from work and haven't had a chance to look if this is mentioned in a thread on something else, but I think it deserves it's own thread.

Now, if you swear, instead of your post showing up with stars or the swear word, you get " **no no word** " in the middle of your post. For instance: What the fuck?

Seriously @KnotPorscha, @KnotJackie, etc, I thought you were going to treat us like adults. If I understood the new TOS correctly, we wouldn't get in trouble for using swear words unless we were directing them at another user. So why in the world is "**no no word**" showing up in posts?  And of all the things you could have replaced swear words with, you picked "no no word"? That makes me feel like a 5 year old.

Also, how do I create a poll? I can't find that option.

ETA: And of course I found where people were talking about it after I start digging. Apologies. I really need sleep.

I was under the impression that people were using **no no word** as a joke, not that TK was censoring any swear words as **no no word**, but I guess I'm not sure.

My "what the fuck" above actually says "what the insert an f word here" in the posting box. But when I hit post, it changes.

Hmmm...I think you're right.  Before when I posted the word "fuck", it didn't change when I posted, but when I tried again, it did.

Okay, so I actually see the F-word on my post above.  Does it say **no no word** for everyone else?

Edit: Now it says **no no word**.  When I first posted, it actually appeared as the F-word, though.
  • I've heard that when you quote someone's post, the actual word shows up in your edit box, but it's censored again when you post. I haven't tried it though.

Quoting my OP does show the f word in the edit box.

@libby2483 - I do not see the swear word, I see "no no word."
  • Yeah, you're right.  It did change to that after I refreshed the page.  I agree that it does seem really juvenile to censor any swear word with **no no word**.  That is one thing I like better about ProBoards -- you can use whatever fucking language you want without being censored.  I don't feel the need to swear constantly, but I think the censorship is a bit much.
  • I fell like I'm in kindergarten.   Really "no no word"?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yes, it's pretty lame. Just make it star it out if it's gonna be censored. The no no word crap is dumb.

Exactly. I can live with censorship, even if it's not the TOS and we've been told swearing is okay. But using the phrase "no no word" like we're kids is insulting.
  • I can deal with having language censored out. I don't like it being censored to "no no word," though. I think it takes it from "don't use no no language" to the level of "we're now going to talk to you like you're five."

  • I think it's funny when I read it, but normally when you're using the word, that's not the intent so it's shifting the impact of peoples statements which I definitely do not appreciate.

Do we have to go all BSG on TK? What the frack?

  • I think that the board mod can change what shows up for censored words.  I just tested it on the board that I mod and it seems to have been changed.

I will take a look at it.

ETA: I just looked at my mod queue and it says blocked words get replaced with stars like **** so I have no clue where this no no word business comes from.

Why are swear words even blocked?  According to the TOS, "We know you are all adults, and no, we’re not going to ban you for using profanity, sarcasm or sharing your opinion in conversation."

TK Gods, if you know we're adults, why are you treating us like children?  Also, it says you're not going to ban us for profanity....which implies it's allowed.  What gives?

  • The **** is what I changed it to on my board.  Maybe I have greater powers than I thought. ;)

@gailpete There is an issue with mod powers right now. Right now it's a free for all and not board specific.  Every single mod is getting every single spam message/mod queue therefore any mod can act on any board. So if you changed something in the mod queue than it's changed for all board.  We've asked TK gods to look into this but so far no one has answered our questions about this.

This is what I was wondering, too, Joan.

My thought that the new boards are some sort of package they purchased that is being tailored to the site, not something they created from scratch, and maybe there's a lot of things that are set up automatically...so there's a lot of refining left to do. I am not sure it's on purpose.

  • Maybe "no no word" was the KG's revenge for April Fool's day.
  • If mods can change the way swear words are censored, perhaps we can also tweak the list of words?

    Just food for thought...

That's some devilish thinking. I like it. Hmm.....

ETA: Yep, we can.  Too bad I don't have the balls for that.  Although, it was quite funny to see the list of words that we can't say.  And it kinda makes me want to change the **** to something silly (but not demeaning, like "no no word").  I wonder what would make a good substitution.
    Anniversary
  • Yeah we can but I wouldn't. I mean some of the blocked words are pretty stupid but most of them are pretty bad slurs that should be banned.

So to me, regardless of how bad the word is, I don't think any words should be banned per se.  I think if you use a slur you should suffer consequences (ie, removing the offending post, banning frequent abusers), but I feel like banning words that are just curse words (F word, S word, etc) when the TOS does not forbid them is silly.  It seems like the censoring is more so used for curse words than actual slurs. If the TOS doesn't forbid them, censoring them is a bit over the top.

  • I agree with you regarding the TOS. Hopefully they clear it up soon.

  • I think context is important too. I looked up the word "bohunk" earlier when making my Sixteen Candles reference and had noooooo idea it was considered a slur so I refrained from using it in my joke/comment. But, I think saying it in this non-derogatory context is ok.

I've seriously only heard it used in that flick.  Who knew?
